IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the current and future layout of a university's sport centre that will be developed soon.
Overall, sports centre will have a significant transformation. The total area, which is a bit small will be expanded horizontally and additional facilities will be added in the future plan.
In the current plan, there is a central main building where gym is present on the northeast part, whereas reception area is placed exactly on the opposite, with a pool in centre. Seating for the memebers is avaialbe at the eastern side of the pool, while changing room at the western side. Outdoors courts are built on both sides of this central building.
However, in the future plan, the buidling will be expanded to add new facilities. Area of gym will be increased as well as former changing room, seating, reception will stay exactly as per the current layout. However, more changing rooms will be built; one at the southerneast corner and the other at the couthernwest corner. The southern boundary of the building will have a Sports shop and a Cafe, both on left and right sides of the reception. Moreover, a huge leisure pool will be constructed at the northwest boundary.Lastly, two dance studios will be made on the northeast corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a clear overview of the expansion and identify several important changes, including the larger gym, the leisure pool, and the two dance studios. Most of the present-day layout is also reported accurately. However, some future details are mislocated or omitted: the sports shop and café are not both on either side of reception; the shop is in the south-west, while the café is in the south-east. The new changing rooms are also in those respective areas, and the sports hall east of the seating is not mentioned. Calling the dance studios “northeast” is broadly plausible, but their position along the eastern wall would be more precise. Covering these features accurately would make the comparison more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a useful introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of the current and future plans. This gives the reader a clear progression from the existing layout to the redevelopment, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between ideas. The main limitation is that some details are grouped in ways that make their locations less clear: for example, the sports shop and café are described together as being on either side of reception, although they occupy different areas and are not directly beside it. The repeated use of “However” also makes the contrast slightly mechanical. Grouping future features by west, centre, and east would make the spatial progression more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing plans, including “expanded horizontally,” “former,” “boundary,” and “constructed.” These choices help communicate the main changes. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce lexical control: “memebers,” “avaialbe,” “buidling,” and “southerneast” are misspelled, while “sport centre” and “area of gym will be increased” are not natural collocations in this context. “Huge” is also less suitable than a neutral term such as “larger” for an academic description. Aim for accurate spelling and conventional map language, such as “sports centre,” “the gym will be extended,” and “in the south-eastern corner.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “The total area, which is a bit small, will be expanded horizontally” and a contrast structure with “whereas.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. Articles are missing in “Overall, sports centre” and “where gym is present”; the latter also has an awkward tense for describing the current plan. In “while changing room at the western side,” the clause is incomplete, and “former changing room, seating, reception will stay” needs clearer grammatical coordination. There are also punctuation issues, such as the missing space after “boundary.” Use complete parallel clauses and check articles and verb forms to improve accuracy.
