IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate structure of a university's sports centre in predent and future times.

Overall, it is clear that there are many drametic changes in the layout of sports centre. There are two outdoor courts which are planned to be demolished and all the facilities will be located in a large building.

In present times, the centre is divided into 3 areas with one main building in centre, whereas two outdoor courts in both east and west sides of main centre respectively. The reception is situated infron of entrance, and seats are arranged in the eastern side of the reception. The changing room door is right next to the reception in west side. After changing clothes, you can enter in a pool with 25m depth. There is also a gym located in the northern side and backside of pool.

In future, two outdoor courts are demolished completely and area is merged with centre building. The new large building has some major new places. After entering, there is cafe on the east side with new changing room right next to it. There is new sports shop which also has a new changing room in the west side. In west, there is a huge leisure pool and it's entrance in the changing room. The sports hall is planned to be built right next to seating in the east. While gym area has increased significantely with a way linking directly to reception. Two dance studio are supposed to built in the north-eastern part of building. The remaining places are not planned to changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both plans and give a clear overview of the main transformation: the outdoor courts are absorbed into an expanded building, with new facilities added. Several comparisons are accurate, including the leisure pool on the west, sports hall beside the seating, and the two dance studios in the north-east. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the 25m label indicates the pool’s length, not its depth, and the changing room is beside the pool rather than described as having a door next to reception. The future gym’s extension is noted, but the claim that it has a way linking directly to reception is not supported by the plan. More precise descriptions of the retained central facilities and the new southern rooms would make the account more complete and consistently accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a sensible overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of the present and future layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In present times” and “In future” signal the shift between plans. Within paragraphs, however, some details are presented as a sequence of actions (“After changing clothes, you can enter in a pool”) rather than as a clear spatial description. The final sentence, “The remaining places are not planned to changed,” is also vague about which facilities remain. Use consistent location-based grouping—for example, west, centre, and east—and clearer references to the facilities to strengthen the progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “demolished,” “merged,” “leisure pool,” “sports hall,” and “dance studio,” which helps communicate the redevelopment. There is also some variety in how you describe location and change. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “predent,” “drametic,” “infron,” and “significantely.” Some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “in future times,” “main centre,” and “a pool with 25m depth”; the last also misrepresents the map label. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations for plans, such as “the centre currently has” and “the pool is 25 metres long.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise spatial terms would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including a contrast with “whereas” and a clause beginning “While gym area has increased.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. Examples include “illustrate structure” (missing an article), “two dance studio are,” and “are not planned to changed.” The sentence “The changing room door is right next to the reception in west side” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the facilities. Use complete, direct descriptions such as “A changing room is west of the pool” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and infinitive forms. More consistently accurate sentences are needed alongside the attempted complex structures.
