IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given maps depict the comparison of university’s sports centre as it is now and how it will look after redevelopment.
Overall, many useful amenties will be constructed in future while few will remain untouched.
At first glance, there is a 25m pool in the heart of university sports centre and there is also a gym behind it. Reception is in the opposite side of the pool. However, changing room is located in the north-west side and the seating is beside east direction of the pool. One of the outdoor court is in eastern diretion behind the seating while another is in west direction near changing room.
Moving ahead, in the future plan, some basic amenties will be included. There will be a sports hall connected to the seating and the gym will be expanded towards east direction. Leisure pool will be constructed behind the changing room. In south-east corner, sports shop and another changing room and in south-west corner, cafe and one more changing will be installed. Two dance studioes will be included to the north-east direction. Reception, seating and changing room expected to remain at their similar locations in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a relevant comparison and identify several key features, including the central 25m pool, the gym, the outdoor courts, and facilities planned for the expanded centre. The overview that many amenities will be added while some remain is appropriate, and you correctly note that the reception, seating and a changing room stay in place. However, some details are unclear or misplaced: the future sports shop and changing room are in the south-west, while the café and another changing room are in the south-east, but your account reverses these. The leisure pool is west of the original pool, not “behind” the changing room. More precise descriptions of the expansion and retained features would make the report more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview, a description of the current layout, and a paragraph about the future plan. This gives the reader a sensible route through the comparison. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “At first glance,” and “Moving ahead” help signal stages, although some sound conversational or mechanical for a formal map report. Spatial references are sometimes difficult to follow, particularly “behind it,” “opposite side,” and “in south-east corner,” because the direction or reference point is not always explicit. Grouping the future additions by west, centre and east would improve progression, while direct comparisons would connect the two plans more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing facilities and change, including “constructed,” “expanded,” “remain,” and “locations.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but some wording is imprecise or unnatural, such as “useful amenities,” “behind the changing room,” and “beside east direction.” There are also spelling errors in “amenties,” “diretion,” and “studioes,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for standard map-description collocations and precise directional language, such as “to the east of” or “in the south-west corner.” Avoid repeating “included” and “constructed” when describing additions; a wider set of accurate verbs would make the account more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and some more developed structures, including the contrast introduced by “while” and the future construction “will be constructed.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “comparison of university’s sports centre” needs an article or possessive form, and “Reception, seating and changing room expected to remain” is missing the verb “are.” Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “One of the outdoor court” and “another changing.” Several sentences use awkward prepositional patterns, which can make spatial relationships unclear. Check articles, plural forms and complete verb phrases, and practise varied sentence structures with accurate location clauses.
