IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The plan illustrate how reconstruction in the future year will change the appearance of a university's sports centre compared to its present condition.

Overall, the total number of rooms as well as other facilities are also increased. New facilities such as cafe, dance studio, leisure pool, sports hall, and two more changing rooms will also be introduced and the university sports centre area will be extended.

At present, there is a reception area and beside of it there is only 1 changing room wherein 2 more will be added in the future. Moreover, in the current university sports centre there is no dance studio which will also be introduced. The Leisure pool is also being introduced in the future plan and so the sports hall. Beside of lower southeast side of changing room, a cafe is also being introduced.

In conclusion, the overall area of university's sport centre is will be extended and new facilities will be provided in the future plans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main overall change: the centre will expand and gain facilities, including a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios and café. You also compare the present and future by noting that dance studios are absent now and will be added. However, the account is only partial: it does not describe several important spatial changes, such as the gym extending east, the sports hall and studios on the eastern side, or the outdoor courts being replaced as the building expands. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the plan adds two changing rooms, but “2 more” is not clearly distinguished from the existing room, and the café’s position is described imprecisely. A clearer overview and more accurate coverage of locations would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details, with a concluding sentence. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is limited because the body repeats the introduction’s list of new facilities rather than grouping changes by area or comparing the two plans systematically. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “also,” and “In conclusion” are used, but some connections are mechanical or do not clarify relationships. For example, “Beside of lower southeast side of changing room” makes the café’s location difficult to follow. Organise the description spatially—perhaps west, centre, then east—and use clear references to show what remains, moves, or is added.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “reception area,” “changing room,” “dance studio,” “leisure pool,” and “sports hall.” This range is sufficient to communicate the general subject and several proposed additions. However, word choice and collocation are often awkward or repetitive: “reconstruction in the future year,” “appearance,” and “facilities are also increased” do not express the changes naturally. “Beside of” and “wherein” are also unsuitable in these descriptions, and “cafe” should be written with the accent as “café” if following standard spelling. Aim for precise map language such as “located to the west of,” “will be added,” and “will be replaced by,” rather than repeatedly saying that facilities are “introduced.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including “New facilities such as … will also be introduced” and a sentence contrasting current and future provision. However, control is inconsistent, and several errors make the relationships between features harder to understand. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “The plan illustrate,” while “the overall area … is will be extended” contains an incorrect verb construction. Other examples include “there is only 1 changing room wherein 2 more will be added” and “Beside of lower southeast side,” where sentence structure and prepositions are faulty. Most sentences rely on simple patterns, with limited accurate variety. Practise clear comparisons using forms such as “There is currently…, while the redevelopment will add…” and check agreement, tense, and verb forms.
