IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate the current layout of the university sports centre and the proposed changes that will be made to its facilities in the future.

Overall, the university sports centre will undergo significant redevelopment, with several new recreational facilities being introduced and some existing areas being modified or replaced. The main changes will include the expansion of the gym area, the addition of dance studios and a café, and improvements to the overall layout to provide a wider range of facilities for students and visitors.

First of all, gym section was extended to more space, while outdoor courts will be replaced by the leisure pool, followed by a changing room and sports shop will be introduced in the future. Moreover, at the northern- eastern direction, outdoor courts will be transformed into sports hall interlinking with seating section, meanwhile cafe and changing room were introduced for the sports people, although on the northern-eastern direction, two dance studios were established.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main direction of change: the centre expands, the gym grows, and new facilities such as a leisure pool, dance studios, sports hall, café and shop are added. The overview also captures the broad redevelopment. However, some important details are unclear or inaccurate. The leisure pool replaces the western outdoor courts, while the sports hall and two dance studios occupy the eastern expansion; describing the courts as transformed into a sports hall blurs these distinct changes. The gym extends eastward along the north, rather than simply being “extended to more space.” You also omit that the 25m pool, central changing room, seating and reception remain in place. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of what stays unchanged would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a final paragraph describing specific changes. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the final paragraph combines several locations and changes in one long sequence, so the spatial progression is difficult to follow. Phrases such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” “while,” and “meanwhile” are used to connect ideas, but the relationships between them are sometimes unclear; for example, the two dance studios are mentioned after the café and changing room without a clear transition to the eastern side. Grouping the western and eastern developments into separate sentences or paragraphs, and using clearer location-based links, would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing redevelopment, including “proposed changes,” “recreational facilities,” “replaced,” and “introduced.” These choices communicate the general topic and show some flexibility beyond basic terms. Some less successful collocations and imprecise expressions reduce naturalness: “gym section was extended to more space” and “at the northern-eastern direction” do not describe the plan idiomatically, while “interlinking with seating section” is unclear. “For the sports people” is also an imprecise label for users of the centre. Aim for established map-description phrases such as “the gym is extended eastwards,” “in the north-east,” and “adjacent to the seating area.” More precise facility and location vocabulary would strengthen the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence and clauses linked with “while” and “although.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make the final paragraph harder to follow. For example, “gym section was extended” needs an article, and “followed by a changing room and sports shop will be introduced” combines structures incorrectly; use a coordinated clause such as “a changing room and sports shop will also be added.” Tense and agreement are also inconsistent in “cafe and changing room were introduced” when describing future plans. The long final sentence contains several clauses without clear grammatical control. Shorter sentences with consistent future forms would improve accuracy while retaining variety.
