IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given maps illustrate about a layout of university sport centre proposed for the several modification.

Overall, while the centre swiming pool and gym facilities in the central block will remain largely unchanged, the surrounding outdoor areas and eastern wings are set to undergo major expansion to include wide range of new recreational and sporting amenities.

Looking at the central building, the 25 m swiming pool and changing room, gym and seating area will remain unchanged in their current positions, flanked by the reception at the south. However, the outdoor courts situated on the eastern side of the complex will be replaced by a newly constructed sports hall. Adjacent to this new hall, three dance studio will be build along the eastern side of the central building, replacing the previous outdoor space.

Significant changes are also planned for the western and southern peripheries. The outdoor courts on the west will be removed to make space for new leisure pool and an additional changing room. Furthermore, a new sports shop will be added to the southeast corner next to the entrance, and a cafe will be introduced on the southern side, positioned between the new sports shop and a secondary changing room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response gives a clear overview of the main transformation: the central facilities remain, while the centre expands and gains new amenities. It also selects relevant details from both sides of the plan, including the western leisure pool and the eastern sports hall. Most locations are reported accurately. However, there are a few notable inaccuracies: the future plan shows two dance studios, not three, and the sports shop is in the south-west, not the south-east. The café and additional changing room are in the south-east, rather than the café being between the shop and changing room. These errors keep the account from being fully precise, although the main changes are clearly covered and supported with comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on the central and eastern areas, then one on the western and southern changes. This gives the reader a logical progression through the plans. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points, and the contrast between retained and replaced facilities is easy to follow. Some transitions are slightly broad, particularly “Significant changes are also planned,” which does not specify the area until later. More precise spatial signposting and clearer separation of the south-west and south-east additions would make the progression even more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of map-description vocabulary, including “flanked by,” “replaced,” “adjacent to,” and “peripheries.” These choices help describe location and change, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “proposed for the several modification” and “wide range of new recreational and sporting amenities” could be expressed more naturally, while “three dance studio” also shows an inaccurate word form. Spelling slips such as “swiming” and “cafe” reduce control. Aim for precise, conventional phrases for plans, such as “planned redevelopment,” and check spelling and plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “while” and the sentence describing the courts being replaced. Most sentences communicate the intended changes, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening sentence has faulty article and number patterns (“a layout” and “the several modification”), and “three dance studio will be build” contains errors in plural agreement and passive verb form. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent, as in “building, the.” The sentence about the café and shop is structurally understandable, though its location details are confusing. Review articles, plural nouns, and passive constructions such as “will be built” to improve accuracy.
