IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given image illustrates a view of the university's sports centre before and after anticipated redevelopment. The present image features a layout that has a central pool area having gym at the North of the pool and changing rooms at North-West of the pool. The pool is 25m deep and is surrounded by seating on the East side and a reception at the South of it; right infront of the entrance. The outdoor courts surround the sports centre from both Eastern and Western sides.

The redevlopment layout featuring the future plan has redefined the model by adding a leisure pool on the East side having its own separate changing room. The reception stays right at the front of entrance and the inside pool, seating area, and gym location remains unchanged. The outdoor court on the West of the layout is replaced by a sports hall that also has a common entrance to another changing room located at the South-East corner, right beside the cafe. The anticipated plan has two dance studios and apparently a narrowed space for outdoor courts. The final plan also includes a mini sports shop which can be found at the left once you enter the sports centre. The overall future plan looks promising while the reduction of outdoor courts remains questionable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main purpose of the plans and report several key features, including the central 25m pool, the gym, seating, reception, and the addition of leisure and sports facilities. However, some important details are inaccurate or unclear: the existing changing room is west of the pool, not north-west, and the future leisure pool is on the west, not the east. The sports hall is east of the seating, rather than replacing the western courts; the western area becomes the leisure pool. The overview is also weakened by the unsupported claim that outdoor courts remain in a narrowed form. To strengthen the response, describe the major expansion and the new facilities in their correct locations, and avoid subjective comments such as “looks promising.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally understandable sequence: it first describes the current centre and then moves to the redevelopment, with a final comment on the future plan. This gives the reader a basic overall progression. However, the information is packed into two long paragraphs, and some links between features are difficult to follow. For example, the sentence about the sports hall, its “common entrance,” the changing room and the café combines several locations and relationships without making them clear. Phrases such as “The anticipated plan” and “The final plan” also repeat the same transition function. Use a brief overview followed by separate, clearly organised descriptions of the existing layout and the main changes, grouping features by area.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing plans, including “redevelopment,” “redefined,” “replaced,” and “anticipated,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices that reduce precision. “The pool is 25m deep” misuses “deep” for the pool’s stated length, while “surround the sports centre” overstates the position of the outdoor courts, which are only on its east and west sides. “Common entrance” is also not clearly supported by the plan. Spelling slips such as “redevlopment” and “infront” further affect accuracy. Choose straightforward, precise location language and check spelling; for example, describe the pool as 25 metres long and the courts as lying to either side of the building.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the description remains understandable. Some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present, but they do not usually prevent the reader from following the main points. For instance, “having gym at the North” needs an article and a more complete construction, while “The present image features a layout that has a central pool area having gym” is awkwardly structured. In “The reception stays right at the front of entrance,” the article is missing before “entrance.” Commas are also inconsistently spaced in “seating area, and the gym.” Aim for cleaner sentence patterns, use articles consistently, and punctuate lists and clauses carefully. These changes would make the location descriptions easier to interpret.
