Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps show the layout of a university sports centre before and after redevelopment.

Overall, it is clear that some new anemities being added in the sports centre and some existing features were removed or replaced by other facilities in future plans.

In the northern part of the club gym area was increased and in the north east side of the centre a sports hall and dance studio were constructed. While, the centre area of the sports club remained same, whereas outdoor courts on the northwest side of the centre were replaced by leisure pool.

Furthermore, new changing rooms were constructed on the both corner of south wall of sports club. Additionally, sports shop and a cafe was built in between the changing rooms alongside the south wall of the university sports club in new map and all features of sports centre were open in the south direction toward main entrance in front of the reception area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change as redevelopment and note that the central area remains largely unchanged, while new facilities are added and outdoor courts are replaced. These are relevant features, and the overview gives the reader a general sense of the plans. However, some details are incomplete or inaccurate: the leisure pool replaces the western courts, but the eastern courts are also built over, and the new facilities are not all positioned as described. The sports shop and café are not between the two new changing rooms; they occupy separate areas along the south-east and south-west sides. The entrance remains south of reception rather than all facilities opening toward it. More precise coverage of these changes would make the summary more complete and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes in the northern/central and southern areas. This gives the information an overall coherent arrangement. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Additionally.” However, some connections are mechanical or confusing. For example, “While, the centre area … remained same, whereas…” combines two contrasting linkers, and the relationship between the sports shop, café, and changing rooms is difficult to follow. Grouping the changes by area and using simpler, more precise transitions would improve progression. Clearer references to which side or facility you mean would also help the reader follow the comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “layout,” “redevelopment,” “replaced,” “constructed,” and “entrance.” This gives you an adequate range for the task, and most of your meaning can be understood. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “anemities” for “amenities,” “gym area was increased” for an expansion, and “open in the south direction” for the entrance’s position. “Club” and “sports club” are also less accurate than “sports centre” for the map. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, such as “extended eastwards,” “located in the south-east corner,” and “the former outdoor courts.” Check spelling and choose terms that match the facilities shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including contrasts with “while” and “whereas,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and agreement are noticeable. “Some new amenities being added” needs a finite verb, such as “some new amenities are being added,” while “the centre area … remained same” needs “the same.” The sentence beginning “While, the centre area…” is not correctly joined, and “a sports hall and dance studio were constructed” does not clearly match the two dance studios shown. In the final sentence, “a sports shop and a cafe was built” has a plural subject and needs “were built.” More controlled clause structure, articles, and subject–verb agreement would improve accuracy.
