IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The university sports club offers various upgrades in the future plans. Presently, the club consists of mainly a pool surrounded by a changing room on it's west and seating arrangement on it's east side. The pool is directly in front of reception and gym is present on the north side of the pool. Overall the current layout appears congested. The above-stated arrangement is further surrounded by two outdoor courts on west and east side.

After redevelopment the variety and number of offered facilities increase. In the future there are two pools one is 25m same as last one in the same location directly in front of reception. Second pool is a leisure pool and has two changing rooms, one on its south and one on its east. The sports hall has been buit next to the seating area which is a nice upgrade. Two dance studios have been added on the south of sports hall. The redevelopment has a cafe and a sports shop. The gym occupies more space in the redevelopment and the number of changing rooms is three as compared to only one in current plant. One important distinction in these layouts is that the outdoor courts have been renovated to offer additional indoor facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change clearly: the former outdoor courts are incorporated into an expanded centre, with more indoor facilities, while the 25m pool remains in place. Several useful comparisons are included, such as the larger gym and the increase in changing rooms. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the leisure pool is west of the 25m pool, and its nearby changing room and sports shop are to the south, not one changing room to its east. The dance studios are along the eastern wall, rather than south of the sports hall. The overview also calls the current layout “congested,” an impression not established by the plans. More precise descriptions of locations and a clearer summary of the overall expansion would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure, moving from the present arrangement to the redevelopment, and the opening of the second paragraph signals the comparison effectively. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “After redevelopment,” and “One important distinction.” At times, however, information is presented as a list rather than grouped by area or by what remains and what changes. The sentence about the leisure pool and its changing rooms is difficult to follow, and “The redevelopment has a cafe and a sports shop” interrupts the sequence of spatial details. Organising the future plan from west to east, and using clearer references such as “on the eastern side,” would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing facilities and change, including “redevelopment,” “surrounded,” “occupies more space,” and “additional indoor facilities.” These choices help communicate the main comparison. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural for a plan description: “sports club” is less accurate than “sports centre,” “seating arrangement” is vague, and “renovated” does not clearly convey that the outdoor courts are replaced by indoor facilities. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “buit” and “plant” where “plan” is intended. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the opening description combines several locations, while “One important distinction in these layouts is that…” introduces a more complex structure. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, possessives, and sentence construction: “on it's west” should use the possessive “its,” and “gym is present” needs an article. The phrase “one is 25m same as last one” is also grammatically incomplete, and “the number of changing rooms is three as compared to only one” would be clearer with a more controlled comparison. Review articles and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
