IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two plans illustrate, the current layout and the future layout of the university sports centre. The future sports centre layout had become very wide and integrated indoor complex.
Overall, the most notable modification is the complete removal of the outdoor courts to make space for a wider variety of specialized re-construction.
In detail, the current layout which is the central building is joined by two large outdoor courts on the far west and far east sides. The main entrance at the sout opens into a reception area, which sits just below the 25m pool. On the west side of the pool there is an changing room while on the other north side of the pool there is an gym.
Moreover, the redevelopment where the central core–including the reception, changing room, gym, seating and 25m pool will remain unchanged. However, the outdoor courts on the west will be replaced by leisure room along with an changing room on the sout side of the wall with an addition to sports shop just aside on the east corner of the changing room.
Although, on the eastern side, the outdoor courts will be replaced by a large sports hall and two dance studio joing along the eastern boundary. Finally, the sourthern entrance will seen the addition of commercial spaces, with a sports shop built to the left of the reception area and a cafe constructed to it right side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both the existing layout and the proposed redevelopment, and your overview identifies the key change: the outdoor courts are removed as the centre expands. The current positions of the pool, reception, gym, changing room and seating are mostly reported accurately, and you note several new facilities. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the leisure facility is a leisure pool, not a “leisure room,” and the future plan adds a sports hall east of the seating, with the dance studios along the eastern wall. The final description of commercial spaces also confuses the sports shop, which is in the south-west, with the café and changing room in the south-east. More precise coverage of these additions would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the present plan and redevelopment. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and contrasts such as “However” help signal change. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, though: “Moreover” and “Although” do not clearly express the relationships intended, and “Although” is left without a matching main clause. The final paragraph also repeats the idea of additions near the southern entrance and shifts between west/east locations, making the sequence harder to follow. Grouping the future changes by west, centre and east, and using clearer transitions, would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing plans, including “layout,” “central core,” “replaced,” and “eastern boundary.” These choices show an attempt to be precise and use less common language. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “specialized re-construction,” “leisure room,” and “commercial spaces” for the facilities shown. There are also spelling errors, including “sout,” “joing,” and “sourthern,” which reduce the polish of the description. Choose standard map-description terms and check spelling; for example, describe the centre as expanding and name each facility exactly as labelled. This would make the vocabulary more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “which” and “while,” and the main meaning is usually recoverable. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. Examples include “The future sports centre layout had become,” where the tense is unsuitable for a planned change, and “the southern entrance will seen,” which has an incorrect verb form. Articles and agreement are also problematic in “an changing room” and “an gym,” while the opening comma in “The two plans illustrate, the current layout” is misplaced. Aim for accurate future forms such as “will be,” check articles before nouns, and punctuate clauses carefully before adding more complex structures.
