IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate how a university's sports centre will look like after its redevelopment from how it looks like now.

Overall, university sports centre will be under going significant changes and involving several new activities and facilities, whereas the main centre of sports area remained the same in both plans. The most notable changes are leisure pool, dance studios, cafes, sport hall and several changing rooms.

The university sports area currently have two outdoor courts, one to the west and other to the east, while centre portion includes 25m pool with gym to the north and reception to the south of the pool and changing room to the west and seating area to the east of the centre pool.

The new layout shows several changes and expansion of overall university's sports area. The outdoor court has been replaced by a leisure pool, which is located to the western side of the changing rooms, whereas two dance studios built located in the eastern part of the sports centre, beside sports hall, which was previously a outdoor court. Additionally, there are several sports shops and cafe near the reception area in the southern part of sports club.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the centre expands, the 25m pool remains central, and new facilities such as a leisure pool, dance studios and sports hall are introduced. Your present-layout description also accurately locates the gym, reception, changing room and seating around the pool. This covers the task well, though some future details are less fully reported. For example, the gym’s eastward extension and the new changing rooms and sports shop in the south-west are not clearly explained, and the café and shop are inaccurately described as being near reception. The overview could also state more precisely that the former outdoor-court areas are incorporated into the enlarged building. Including these specific changes would make the comparison more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the current plan and a final paragraph on the redevelopment. This gives the reader a coherent route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while” and “Additionally” help connect points. However, the final paragraph groups several changes together without a fully clear spatial sequence. The phrase “beside sports hall” does not make the relationship between the two dance studios and the hall precise, while “near the reception area” blurs the locations of the shop and café. Organising the future plan by west, centre and east, and using clearer references such as “in the south-west” and “in the south-east,” would strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “redevelopment,” “outdoor courts,” “western side,” “eastern part” and “facilities.” These terms generally communicate the main changes, and the attempt to use more specific location language is useful. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “sports area” and “sports club” are less suitable than “sports centre,” and “several sports shops” misreports the single sports shop shown. “Cafes” should refer to the café, and “significant changes” is broad where a more exact description of expansion would be stronger. Aim for consistent, precise facility names and avoid adding or pluralising features that the plan does not show.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause beginning “which.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “will look like … from how it looks like now” is an awkward comparison; “the university sports area currently have” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “two dance studios built located” lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. There are also article and tense problems in “which was previously a outdoor court” and “Overall, university sports centre will be.” Use consistent present and future forms, check singular/plural agreement, and build clauses with one clear main verb. These corrections would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
