IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The plans from below state an important information about the future transformation of the University sports centre. The next image represents all his future new rooms designed for all students and staff. We can see more rooms for entertaining starting from the reception sides. In West and East near the entrance, the construction will benefit from new 2 changing rooms and 2 very important facilities, such as the sports shop and the cafe shop. In the North area, located near the left changing room, the leisure pool plays an important role because it is replaces the actual Outdoor courts receiving an impressive number of people due to his incredible enormous space.

Actually, the new indoor space will be a new place and a new favourite space designed for people and this transformation will benefit from new students, maybe an incredible number of students for the registration deadline and why not for new staff

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response recognises that the centre is being redeveloped and mentions several genuine additions, including a leisure pool, changing rooms, a sports shop and a café. However, it reports the plans only minimally and does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main changes. Some locations are misread: the leisure pool is on the west side, not in the north, and the café and added changing room are in the south-east rather than on both sides of the entrance. The claim that the new rooms are “starting from the reception sides” is also unclear. Important comparisons, such as the expansion over the outdoor courts and the retention of the 25m pool, are missing. Focus on describing the layout before and after, using the compass directions accurately and avoiding unsupported predictions about student numbers or benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to move from the redevelopment generally to particular areas, and phrases such as “In the North area” signal a change of focus. However, the information is not arranged in a clear comparison of the present and future plans. The response shifts from new rooms to imagined benefits and then to student registration, so the reader cannot follow a consistent account of the layout. The final paragraph does not add a relevant map feature, and several references, including “his future new rooms” and “the entrance,” are unclear. Organise the response into an introduction and overview, followed by a systematic description of the main changes—perhaps west, central and east—and use linking phrases to show what remains and what is added.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “transformation,” “leisure pool,” “changing rooms” and “sports shop,” so the reader can identify several facilities. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a plan. “Entertaining” does not clearly describe the facilities, “cafe shop” is not the appropriate name for the café, and “incredible enormous space” is repetitive and unsupported. Phrases such as “important information” and “new favourite space” are also vague rather than precise. Use the labels shown on the plans and choose neutral terms such as “facility,” “extension” and “located.” This would make the description more precise and reduce the impression of promotional language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentence forms, for example, “In the North area, located near the left changing room, the leisure pool plays an important role because it is replaces…” However, complex constructions are often faulty, and the limited sentence patterns make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Errors include “an important information” (uncountable noun), “it is replaces” (incorrect verb form), and “this transformation will benefit from new students” (faulty verb pattern). The final sentence also runs on without clear punctuation. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses. Check articles, subject–verb patterns and verb forms, and use full stops to separate distinct points.
