IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps given compare the layout of sports centre in a university before and after its proposed redevolpment.

Overall, sports centre will see major structural developments with construction of new dance studios and changing rooms in addition to the replenishment of outdoor courts.

Looking at the current map of sports centre, there is a central pool namely '25m pool' with entrance from its south facing reception. Reception is connected to the seating and changing room on east and west side of pool respectively. Gym is on north to the central pool. Outdoor courts are on both east and west sides of pool which deminishes in propsed redevlopment.

After the renovation of sports centre, central pool with seating and changing room will remain same. There will be addition of new changing rooms one with cafe on south east corne and the other with sports shop on south west corner the building. A new leisure pool will be constructed to the west of central pool and sports hall to the east side sharing corridor with two dance studios side by side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response gives a clear overview of substantial redevelopment and identifies several key changes, including the new leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café and additional changing rooms. It also correctly notes that the central pool, seating and central changing room remain, and describes the current gym and outdoor courts. This provides a relevant comparison of both plans. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the outdoor courts are replaced by an expanded building, not replenished, and the two dance studios are arranged one north of the other rather than side by side. The gym’s eastward extension and the sports hall’s position east of the seating could also be reported more precisely. More exact spatial comparisons would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the present and proposed layouts. This gives the reader a clear progression from the existing plan to the redevelopment, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the current map,” and “After the renovation” help signal each stage. The comparison is generally easy to follow. Some connections between features are less precise, however: “Reception is connected to the seating and changing room” could more clearly state which feature lies on each side, while the final sentence groups the sports hall and studios without explaining their distinct positions. A more systematic west-to-east or north-to-south sequence would make the spatial relationships even clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is enough vocabulary to describe the plans and their changes, including “central pool,” “south east corner,” “constructed,” and “remain.” The response also attempts more specific terms such as “structural developments” and “replenishment.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “replenishment of outdoor courts” does not describe their replacement, and “diminishes in proposed redevelopment” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “redevolpment,” “deminishes,” and “redevlopment” also reduce accuracy. To show more flexible and precise control, use standard planning language such as “is replaced by,” “is extended,” and “is located,” and check spelling carefully. The intended meaning is usually recoverable, but precision is not consistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple statements and more complex structures, including “with construction of new dance studios…” and “After the renovation…, central pool with seating and changing room will remain same.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and possessives are often missing, as in “layout of sports centre” and “west of central pool”; use “the sports centre” and “to the west of the central pool.” There are also awkward sentence patterns, such as “Reception is connected to the seating and changing room on east and west side,” where the locations need clearer grammatical framing. The future description would benefit from consistent, complete clauses and accurate use of articles and prepositions. Greater control of these patterns would make the varied sentence forms more effective.
