IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram exhibits the current layout of university sports center and a future plan for the same center.

The present layout depicts the entrance to the sports center in on the south which leads to a reception. There is a 25m long pool in the middle which is connected to the changing room on the west. The way to the pool is through the changing room. There is a seating arrangement on the east to the pool and a gym which is on the north. There are two outdoor courts: one on the east and one on the west to the pool and gym.

The future plan of the sports center shows a main door on the south which directly connects to the reception. A sports shop is adjacent to the changing room on the southwest corner which is connected to a leisure pool on the west. A 25m long pool is present with a changing room on the left and a seating on the right side. A sports hall has been introduced to the east of the seating arrangement. The gym lies on the northest side of the center. On the east side, there are two dance studios separated by a wall. A changing room and a cafe lie on the southeast corner of the sports center.

There are several changes noticed in the future plan. A leisure pool, a sports shop, a sports hall, two dance studios and a cafe have been planned to installed which are absent in the present layout. On the other hand, the outdoor courts will not be available in future. Although, the pool in the center along with the changing room, seating and gym are expected to be in the same spot, the length of the gym will be extended in the future plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both plans and identify the main transformation: the outdoor courts are removed as the building expands, while new facilities such as a leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, shop and café are added. You also note that the central pool, changing room and seating remain in place, and that the gym is extended. These details make the comparison relevant and generally accurate. Some points are less fully or precisely reported: the future gym is described as being on the “northest side,” rather than explaining that it extends eastward along the north, and the present-plan claim that access to the pool is through the changing room is not supported by the plan. A clearer overview of the expansion and the major additions would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the diagrams, describes the present layout, then the future plan, and ends with a summary of changes. This sequence helps the reader follow the comparison, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Although” show an attempt to connect contrasting information. However, the final paragraph repeats several facilities already listed, while the two descriptive paragraphs could make the spatial relationships easier to follow through more consistent grouping—for example, describing the west, centre and east in order. Some references are also imprecise, such as “the pool” when both a 25m pool and a leisure pool are discussed. More selective summarising and clearer referencing would make cohesion less repetitive and more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing plans, including “adjacent,” “introduced,” “extended,” and “southeast corner.” These choices communicate most locations and changes clearly, and the response uses relevant facility names throughout. At times, however, wording is repetitive or not quite natural: “sports center” and “future plan” recur frequently, while “seating arrangement” is less precise than simply “seating.” There are also inaccurate forms or collocations, including “northest side” and “planned to installed.” Aim for more precise directional language and vary reporting verbs, such as “is located,” “is replaced by,” and “will be added.” These refinements would improve accuracy and flexibility without sacrificing clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which is connected to the changing room”) and a concessive structure beginning “Although.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “the entrance … in on the south” contains an unnecessary preposition, and “planned to installed” needs a passive form such as “planned to be installed.” The sentence beginning “Although” is punctuated as a separate sentence fragment, and “a changing room and a cafe lie” has a number-agreement problem if treated as a single combined subject. Check articles and prepositions as well, as in “a seating” and “on the east to the pool.” More accurate control of these patterns would make the varied structures more effective.
