IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the comparison bewteen the present structure of the university's sports center and how it will look after renovation.
Overall, the area will become more organised, with several new facilities are introduced and some existing features are removed. The most significant change will be the gym expansion and the addition of leisure pool.
At present, the outdoor courts are located in west and east side, while the gym is standing next to the change room and seatings. By future, the outdoor courts will be replaced by a leisure pool and sports hall with the addition of two dance studios which will be located in the eastern part of the centre, while the gym will be expanded across the north-east side maintaining its position next to the changing room at the centre.
In addition, two changing rooms will be made at the bottom corners of the west and east side of the centre with new features attracting the students such as, sports shop to the west and cafe to the east, next to the changing room. The reception at the centre will remain in the same position as well as the changing room next to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a clear overview of expansion, new facilities and the removal of the outdoor courts. Several comparisons are accurate, including the leisure pool and sports hall replacing the courts, the two eastern dance studios, and the reception and central changing room remaining. However, some important details are incomplete or imprecise: the gym extends east along the northern side, rather than simply “across the north-east side,” and the future layout also includes a sports hall east of the seating and a café and changing room in the south-east. The statement that the gym is currently next to the changing room and seating is also unclear about their positions. More precise coverage of these relationships would make the report more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the current and future layout, and then further additions and retained features. This gives the reader a coherent overall account, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “At present,” and “In addition” help signal the stages. However, the third paragraph combines several locations and changes in a long sentence, making the relationships between the facilities harder to follow. The final paragraph also repeats information about the changing room and reception without clearly distinguishing the central facilities from the new rooms in the corners. Use shorter, location-focused sentences and clearer references to north, south, east and west to improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing changes and locations, including “replaced,” “addition,” “expanded,” and “remain in the same position.” These choices communicate the main developments, and terms such as “eastern part” and “bottom corners” show an attempt to describe spatial relationships. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “more organised” is not clearly supported by the plans, “gym expansion” is less natural than “expansion of the gym,” and “features attracting the students” is vague for a map description. There are also spelling errors in “bewteen” and “cafe.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary and consistent spelling, and avoid evaluative claims about the facilities unless the visual supports them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while” and “which,” and most of the layout remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are noticeable, though. In “with several new facilities are introduced,” the structure should be “with several new facilities being introduced” or “as several new facilities are introduced.” “The gym is standing” is an awkward tense choice for describing the present plan; “the gym is located” is more suitable. There are also article and number issues in “in west and east side” and “the addition of leisure pool,” as well as the comma and “such as” construction in “such as, sports shop.” Review articles, prepositions and clause structure, especially in longer sentences, to improve accuracy while retaining your range.
