IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given two plans illustrate the layout of a university's sports area at the moment and how it will be modified in future after redesign.

Overall, Gym will be expanded to a large area to accomodate many facilities by replacing outdoor courts at either side with leisure pool, sports hall, studios and other rooms. The main area of gym includes changing room at the west, next to main pool and the seating arrangement at the east will remain unchanged.

At the west side, outdoor court will be converted to a large leisure pool with attached changing room. While on the east side, a big sports hall will be built next to seating area and two dance studios will come at the end. In addition, common changing room will come at the south right end corner.

As per the future layout plan, the entrance will be extended with the sports shop and cafe at either sides, but the reception area remains same and the gym area at the north side will be elongate across two sides.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main change clearly: the centre expands over the former outdoor courts, adding a leisure pool, sports hall and dance studios, while several central facilities remain. The overview also captures the gym’s expansion and the retention of the pool, seating and reception. This meets the task well, and the west/east comparisons are relevant. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the future plan adds changing rooms in both the south-west and south-east, but “common changing room” mentions only the latter; the sports shop and café are not on either side of the entrance, and the entrance itself is not described as extended. The gym extends eastward along the north, rather than “across two sides.” More precise coverage of these features would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the western and eastern changes. This gives the reader a generally coherent progression, and contrasts such as “At the west side” and “on the east side” help organise the spatial information. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. “While on the east side” is a fragment, and “As per the future layout plan” adds little to the progression. The final paragraph also groups the entrance, shop, café, reception and gym together, although these features are in different parts of the plan. Organise the details by location and use clearer references to show exactly where each new facility is situated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing redevelopment, including “converted,” “replacing,” “expanded” and “remain unchanged.” These choices communicate the broad changes, and the response uses relevant terms for the facilities. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, though: “sports area” is less exact than “sports centre,” “seating arrangement” suggests a layout rather than the seating area, and “common changing room” is not a natural description here. There are also spelling and form slips, including “accomodate” and “elongate.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and check spelling; for example, describe the gym as extending eastward and refer to the two new dance studios directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between the west and east sides. Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. “While on the east side, a big sports hall will be built” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; join it to the preceding sentence or recast it. In “the gym area … will be elongate,” the verb form is incorrect, and “the entrance will be extended with the sports shop and cafe at either sides” has an unclear grammatical relationship and faulty number agreement. Use complete clauses, accurate future forms, and carefully controlled singular/plural forms. These revisions would improve clarity while preserving your range of sentence structures.
