IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the changes that took place in university sports centre till today.
Overall, it is quite visible that the area underwent a drastic transformation, shifting from a primarily area into a more urbanized one as multiple new building had been constructed over the given time period, however few remained at same place.
Looking at the details, in past, the east side of the area was dominated by outdoor courts. However, in the middle of the map there was a 25m pool constructed, and in the east side of the centre there was situated a seating system. Moreover, in the north and south there were gym and reception located. In addition, after reconstructed the sport centre there are built various dance studio and changing room.
In contrast, some features remained unchanged, such as gym and pool, several new amenities were introduced, including a leisure pool, changing room, sports hall, dance studio, cafe, and a sports shop. Consequently, the area have become much more developed by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide an overview of substantial redevelopment and identify several additions, including the leisure pool, sports hall, dance studios, café and sports shop. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear: the outdoor courts were on both sides, not just the east, and the gym and pool are described as unchanged even though only the 25m pool remains in its original position; the gym extends eastward. The account also gives limited detail about where the new facilities are located, and the statement that the area became “more urbanized” is not a precise summary of the plans. To strengthen the response, compare the west and east expansions explicitly and distinguish retained facilities from those extended or added.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by detail paragraphs, and transitions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. The overall progression is understandable, but the description of the present layout and the future plan is not consistently separated: the third paragraph begins with past features and then shifts to reconstruction without clearly mapping the changes. Some linking is also mechanical, and “In contrast” does not accurately introduce the point that follows, which lists both retained and new amenities. Organise the body by comparing the west, centre and east, or by clearly contrasting present and future, and use references that make each location and time period explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “underwent a drastic transformation,” “amenities,” “remained unchanged,” and “introduced.” These choices show an attempt to describe change rather than simply list labels. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “primarily area,” “seating system,” and “after reconstructed the sport centre.” “Urbanized” is also not the most suitable word for describing an expanded sports facility. Aim for accurate map language and natural collocations, for example “mainly consisted of,” “seating area,” and “following redevelopment.” Check word forms and spelling, including “sports centre” and “café,” so that vocabulary choices communicate the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “however” and a sentence introduced by “In contrast.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “multiple new building had been constructed” has a plural agreement problem, while “the area have become” uses the wrong verb form. The sentence “after reconstructed the sport centre there are built” also has an incorrect verb construction, and several clauses omit articles or use awkward word order, as in “in the east side … there was situated.” Use consistent past forms for the existing plan and future forms for the proposed plan, and practise accurate subject–verb agreement and clause construction.
