Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans below demonstrate the layout of a university's sports campus now, and how it will look after redevelopment.

Overall, current planning shows separate establishment however, later plan shows one complete building for all the activitiy areas. Additinally, various new activities are going to get introduced inside the campus along with existing activities.

To begin with, there is an addition of leisure pool for all the members of sports centre, along with attached changing room to the west of the building.Right after the entrance, addition of cafe onthe right and sports shop toward the left is included in the new plan. Reception remained the same from the current plan, along with 25m athletic pool.

However, outdoor court is going to get converted into indoor sports hall and gym is getting spacious by increasing the surface area toward eastern part of the building. Moreover, dance studios are going to get introduced toward north east part of the building, which is on the right side from the entrance after crossing another new changing room right beside the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main change: the separate outdoor courts are absorbed into an expanded building, with new facilities added. You also correctly identify the leisure pool, sports hall, larger gym, dance studios, and the retained 25m pool and reception. This covers the key features and comparisons. Some details, however, are imprecise: the leisure pool is on the west side, but the added changing room and sports shop are in the south-west area, rather than simply being attached to it. The café and changing room are in the south-east, while the sports shop is south-west of the entrance. The description of the dance studios as north-east is broadly accurate, but their position relative to the sports hall could be clearer. More precise spatial reporting would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an overview to descriptions of the western and southern additions and then the eastern redevelopment. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal progression, and the reader can follow the broad comparison. At times, though, the organisation is not fully controlled: the second body paragraph combines the entrance, café, shop, reception and pool, then shifts to the courts and gym without a clear spatial route. Some transitions also imply contrast where the information is simply additional. Grouping details consistently by area—for example, west, centre, then east—and using clearer references to the two plans would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “surface area,” “converted,” and “introduced,” and the main facilities are generally named clearly. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “separate establishment” and “one complete building,” but these are not natural or precise in this context. “Athletic pool” is less accurate than “25m pool,” and “get spacious” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “activitiy” and “Additinally,” along with joined words such as “onthe,” show that lexical accuracy needs more attention. Prefer standard map-description terms such as “facilities,” “expanded,” and “located,” and check spelling and collocations during editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “along with” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “current planning shows separate establishment however” lacks a clear grammatical connection between its clauses, while “Reception remained the same” uses a past form where a future comparison is needed. The sentence beginning “Right after the entrance” is also difficult to parse because its subject and structure are unclear. Missing spaces after full stops and commas further affect accuracy. Use complete, clearly linked clauses and maintain consistent present-versus-future forms when comparing the plans.
