The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
ok as there are two layout plans of gym which shows the present and future planning of it so as compared to itsz presentt condition the future of its look very advance becouse while coming to gym most of the people dont have their gloves comfortable shirts and they need protein so in the future structure their is a sportrs shop which mostly carry these all accesseries aside from this you can see a cafeteria in the future plan which impresses me a lot becouse as we give time a lot to gym but when we come back to home so there is very less time with us to spend in a cafe so as now the gym is providing cafe so it is really a big advantage for us after gym we can go their for some time and enjoy the new gym is providing a seating area a leisure pool and the 2 dance studios in the same venue that pulls every yougster towords it so the future plan of it is so much impressive. thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response recognises that the plans show a present and future layout and mentions several genuine additions, including a sports shop, café, leisure pool and two dance studios. However, it only partially reports the visual information: it focuses mainly on personal opinions about gym users and does not explain the main spatial changes or compare the two plans systematically. For example, it misses the expansion over the outdoor courts, the sports hall, and the retained 25m pool and central facilities. The claim that the shop carries gloves, shirts and protein is not shown in the plans. To improve, give a concise overview of the major redevelopment, then describe the key changes by area using only information visible in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to connect ideas through phrases such as “aside from this,” “so,” and “after gym,” and the response stays broadly on the topic of the future facilities. However, it is presented as one long, largely unpunctuated sequence, so the reader has difficulty identifying an overview, separate comparisons, or a clear progression through the plan. Repeated use of “so” and “because” also makes the links feel mechanical, while references such as “it” and “their” are not always clear. Organise the response into short paragraphs—for example, an overview followed by changes on each side—and use precise location-based transitions such as “on the western side” and “in the south-east.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant facility vocabulary, including “sports shop,” “cafeteria,” “seating area,” “leisure pool,” and “dance studios,” which helps convey several features. However, the range is limited and often informal or imprecise for describing a plan. Phrases such as “very advance,” “pulls every youngster towards it,” and “impresses me a lot” express personal reactions rather than objective comparisons. There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, including “becouse,” “sportrs,” “accesseries,” and “yougster,” which can distract the reader. Use neutral, accurate terms for changes and locations, such as “is added,” “is extended,” and “occupies the former outdoor-court area,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to combine ideas using subordinate clauses and connectors, but the sentence structures are often faulty and difficult to follow. For instance, “as compared to itsz presentt condition the future of its look very advance” has problems with sentence construction, verb form and agreement. The long sequence beginning “while coming to gym” contains several clauses without clear sentence boundaries, and forms such as “the gym is providing cafe” and “there is very less time” are not controlled accurately. Punctuation is also largely absent. These errors sometimes make the intended relationships unclear. Build accuracy with shorter complete sentences first, then add a limited number of well-formed complex sentences, checking articles, verb forms, agreement and punctuation.
