Student answer (Band 7.5)
To reduce poverty, few factors are more important than agriculture. In many developed and developing countries, a substantial amount of money is allocated to this sector because modern farming often requires advanced technology, machinery, electricity, fuel, and other resources. Many people believe that contemporary society has moved beyond traditional farming methods and is increasingly embracing modern agricultural practices to improve people’s lives. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that although agriculture offers many advantages, a large number of people still suffer from hunger and poverty.
Agricultural development is considered essential for reducing poverty and promoting the economic growth of a nation. It provides opportunities and resources that are often unavailable from other sectors. Moreover, agriculture brings significant benefits to people’s lives by supporting food security, employment, and rural development. Since individuals seek progress and a better quality of life, governments need to invest sufficient funds in upgrading agricultural systems and promoting modern farming techniques. If such measures are adopted, many people can benefit greatly. Countries such as China and Japan, for example, have become strong economic powers through agricultural advancement and industrial development. They are able to produce enough food for their own citizens and also export agricultural products to other countries.
However, agriculture alone is not always the best solution for reducing poverty. Many challenges, including technological barriers, high population density, lack of government support, health problems, and financial constraints, can limit the effectiveness of agricultural development. In many poor and developing countries, farmers struggle to adopt advanced agricultural methods because they lack the necessary capital and infrastructure. Therefore, the idea that agriculture by itself can completely eliminate poverty is unrealistic. Economic, social, and individual factors must also be considered when designing poverty-reduction policies.
To reduce poverty effectively, governments should take additional measures, such as opening their economies to foreign investment. Companies like Amazon and Samsung, for instance, could establish warehouses or factories in countries such as Bangladesh. This would create employment opportunities for thousands of people and help reduce poverty significantly.
However, governments and public authorities must carefully evaluate the impact of foreign investment and determine when it is beneficial and when it may cause more harm than good. In conclusion, it is evident that creating job opportunities through foreign investment, together with agricultural advancement, can be an effective strategy for reducing poverty and improving people’s living standards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for persistent hunger and potential solutions. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you discuss agricultural advancement, the link between the 'why' (causes of hunger) and the 'what' (solutions) is occasionally blurred by a focus on general poverty reduction rather than specifically addressing the hunger crisis. For instance, the transition to foreign investment as a solution is relevant but could be more tightly connected to the specific issue of food insecurity. Your position is clear throughout, and the ideas are generally well-supported with examples like China and Japan, though the argument could be strengthened by more direct focus on the specific barriers to food access.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the referencing is generally clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the agricultural focus and the broader economic investment strategy feels more seamless, as the shift in the fourth paragraph is slightly abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'allocated to this sector', 'technological barriers', and 'financial constraints' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common items, and your word choice is generally appropriate for an academic context. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks the 'skilful use of uncommon items' required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology related to food security and global development.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional sentences ('If such measures are adopted...') and complex noun phrases effectively. The grammar is generally accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. To achieve a higher score, aim for a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced relative clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility. The current control is solid, and the majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a strong foundation.
