Student answer (Band 6.5)

Even though the development in agriculture arose, many parts of the world are still starved. Why is this problem happening? What can we do to solve this case?

If we look back on history, numerous advances have been made in the industry of agriculture. Despite the weather conditions and differences of nature, it’s safe to say every country in the world tried its best to take it to its absolute peak. However, some countries are unlucky to not be able to produce enough food for their citizens. For example, parts of Africa have been going through hard times trying to save themselves from starvation. As I mentioned before, the disadvantages the nature around them dragged this issue down. Also it’s inevitable that economical and political arguments influenced it.

Thankfully, some kindhearted people all around the world have been donating and sharing their own food and money. Sadly, it’s still not enough. In my opinion, the best approach to take is to help them produce their own supplies, remind the African politicians to work on their human rights, and donate more until they are able to stand on their own feet. To share with them, we should organize more volunteer events, such as collecting donations or cooking for them. In addition, social media influencers should spread awareness as they are able to reach more people.

In conclusion, despite the fact that the donations have been flowing to them unstoppable, it’s unfortunate to see that it’s lacking. To prevent the worst case scenario from happening, people all around the world should connect and work together for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for hunger and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation regarding 'disadvantages the nature' is vague and lacks specific detail. The solutions provided, such as 'remind the African politicians', are a bit simplistic and lack depth in terms of global policy or systemic change. While the position is clear, the arguments could be extended with more concrete examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The response stays on topic throughout, but the depth of exploration is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices like 'However', 'For example', and 'In addition'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'As I mentioned before' or 'Sadly, it’s still not enough'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points, though the phrasing 'donations have been flowing to them unstoppable' is awkward and impacts the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of unnatural word choice or collocation, such as 'the disadvantages the nature around them dragged this issue down' and 'donations have been flowing to them unstoppable'. While the meaning is generally clear, the student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to incorporate more sophisticated or academic terminology. To improve, the student should focus on learning collocations and more precise academic phrasing rather than relying on general descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the flow, such as 'the development in agriculture arose' (incorrect verb usage) and 'the disadvantages the nature around them dragged this issue down' (syntax error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence construction that suggest a lack of control over complex structures. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
