Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, farming has significantly improved due to the advancement of modern technology, better seeds and advanced machinery. However, millions of people around the world still suffer from hunger. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this problem and suggest some possible solutions.
One of the biggest reasons is that food is not shared equally. Many countries produce enough food, but poor people cannot afford to buy it. At the same time, large amounts of food are wasted by restaurants, supermarkets, households and different institutions. Another glaring reason is climate change. Floods, droughts and extreme weather can destroy crops, making it difficult to produce enough food. In addition, barren land, wars and political conflicts force people to flee their homes, interrupt farming and make it difficult to transport and distribute food to those who need it most.
Several steps can be taken to reduce hunger. First, the government should improve food distribution systems so that food reaches poor and remote communities. They should also support farmers by providing better irrigation, farming equipment, and training to help them deal with changing weather conditions. In addition, they should provide substitute land to those living in barren areas. Furthermore, reducing food waste is essential. Businesses and institutions should donate extra food instead of throwing it away. Finally, international organizations and affluent countries should work together to support people struck with hunger by providing emergency food aid and invest in long-term agricultural development in poorer nations.
In conclusion, although agriculture has developed significantly, hunger continues because of unequal food distribution, poverty, climate change, barren land and conflicts. By improving food distribution system, supporting farmers, reducing waste and strengthening international cooperation, this global problem can be eradicated.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt—the reasons for global hunger and potential solutions—in a balanced manner. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of unequal food distribution and the impact of climate change. The solutions provided, including government intervention and international cooperation, are practical and directly linked to the identified problems. To reach a higher band, the essay could benefit from more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements. For instance, mentioning a specific region or a particular type of agricultural technology would add depth to the arguments. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a central theme, which aids the reader's understanding. Cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Finally' are used effectively to transition between ideas. The progression of arguments is smooth, moving from the causes of hunger to actionable solutions. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text. The structure is consistent and supports the overall flow of the essay well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses terms like 'barren land,' 'affluent countries,' and 'agricultural development' accurately. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the 8.0+ range. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations or nuanced synonyms to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is used correctly. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'improving food distribution system' (should be plural 'systems') in the conclusion, but these do not hinder communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is clear and easy to follow. To achieve a higher band, the student could experiment with a greater variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or more advanced passive constructions, while maintaining the current level of accuracy.
