Student answer (Band 6.0)

May humans around the globe stay hungry, even with advancements in agriculture sector. This essay will discuss

the reasons to this trend and solutions to this issue.

The main contributing factor to this trend is due to economic conditions of certain individuals around the globe. Many people live in poverty and due to this they cannot access to food resources which leads to food insecurity. For example, in many households, member of the family remains unemployed which causes poverty, hence it is difficult for them to provide expenses for food. Another significant reason could be due to uneven advancements in technology. In other words, while some cities may have revolutionised in the field of agricultural technology, while some other cities may not have such advanced agriculture practices. This imbalance in advancements leads to global hunger.

This problem can be tackled if initiatives being taken and worked upon by everyone around the world. Such initiatives could include reducing food wastage. That means to not leave leftover foods which leads to wastage of foods. This can be seen in hotels when people leave their unfinished meals behind. Another initiative to deal with this situation could be achieved by improvements in food distribution. Food being distributed to several parts of the world will allow people to have more choices to buy meals which will eventually decrease global hunger.

In conclusion, poverty and uneven advancements in agricultural technology can lead to issues like food insecurity. However, this problem can be handled by reducing food wastage and improved distribution of food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for global hunger and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of 'uneven advancements' is brief and lacks concrete examples or depth. Similarly, the solutions provided, such as 'reducing food wastage' and 'improvements in food distribution,' are mentioned but not fully explored or supported with specific evidence or logical consequences. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points by explaining the 'how' and 'why' in greater detail, ensuring that each argument is fully developed rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a logical progression from the causes to the solutions. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition 'In other words' is used appropriately, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'This problem can be tackled if initiatives being taken,' which lacks a clear subject. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to previous nouns would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'food insecurity,' 'agricultural technology,' and 'economic conditions.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'May humans around the globe stay hungry' (which is grammatically incorrect and confusing) and 'provide expenses for food.' To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms would help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Examples include 'The main contributing factor... is due to,' 'cannot access to food resources,' and 'initiatives being taken and worked upon.' There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical errors and practice constructing more complex sentences with greater accuracy. Reducing these frequent errors is essential for achieving a higher score in this criterion.
