Student answer (Band 5.0)
In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. There are some reasons for this and I think there are solutions to solve this problem. There are several reasons why people still hungry. First, the food is not distributed properly. Even if we produce enough food, some countries are poor and cannot buy it. For example, in Africa many people have no money to buy food. Second, the weather and natural disaster also affect farming. If there is flood or drought, farmers cannot grow crops and this lead to less food. Third, the population is increasing very fast but the agriculture cannot grow as fast. There are some ways to solve this problem. The government should help poor people by giving them free food or money. Also, international organizations like UN can send food to countries who need it. Another solution is to use new technology in farming so that we can produce more food in less land. For example, using better seeds and machines can increase the production. In conclusion, although agriculture has improved, people still go hungry because of distribution, weather and population. I believe that with the help of government, organizations and new technology we can reduce this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt—reasons for hunger and potential solutions—but the development is insufficient. The ideas are presented in a list-like fashion without adequate elaboration or specific examples. For instance, the mention of 'Africa' is too brief to serve as a well-developed example. Furthermore, the response is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument and results in a penalty. To improve, you should expand on each point with detailed explanations, real-world data, or more nuanced analysis to ensure the response is fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'First', 'Second', 'Third', 'Another solution'). The progression of ideas is logical, but the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the flow feel somewhat simplistic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that sentences are linked more fluidly rather than relying on simple numbering.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms such as 'good', 'help', and 'problem'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'food insecurity', 'logistical challenges', or 'technological innovation', and focus on using more precise collocations to express your ideas more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally understandable, there are recurring errors, such as missing articles ('the' weather, 'the' UN) and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'this lead to less food' should be 'this leads to less food'). The range of structures is limited, and the lack of complex, error-free sentences prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and attempting to vary sentence length and complexity will help improve your score in this area.
