Student answer (Band 6.0)
Despite significant advances in agricultural technology and food production, millions of people around the world continue to suffer from hunger. This mainly because food in not distributed equally and many people cannot afford basic food necessities. However, government and international organization can take several measures to address this critical issue.
One major reason for persistent hunger is poverty. Although world produces enough food to feed its population, people in poorer countries often lack sufficient money to purchase nutritious food. In addition, armed conflicts, political instability and natural disasters can severely affect food production and distribution. For example, we can force farmers to leave their land, destroy crops and disrupt transportation networks. As a result, food may be available in one region while people in another area face severe shortages. Furthermore, food wastage is a significant problem in developed countries, where large amount of food on a daily basis is thrown in garbage from households, supermarkets and restaurants.
Several steps can be taken to reduce global hunger. First, governments should invest in rural infrastructure, including irrigation systems, roads and storage facilities, so that people and communities become self sufficient and do not reply on other sources and distribute their food effectively. Additionally, financial assistance should be provided in developing countries so that people can encourage one another to learn these techniques. Finally, reducing food waste should be a priority, supermarkets and restaurants should donate their leftover food to food banks to reduce the wastage.
To conclude, people are facing hunger problem not because we are unable to produce enough food but because we are lacking to distribute it effectively. Educating and encouraging people of developing countries to grow their food and proper distribution can address this issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes of hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as poverty, conflict, and food waste. However, the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the point about armed conflicts is introduced with 'we can force farmers', which is logically unclear as the subject 'we' does not fit the context of conflict-driven displacement. While the solutions are practical, they could be expanded with more specific examples to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a general level, preventing it from reaching the 'well-developed' criteria of Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the opening sentence of the second paragraph: 'This mainly because food in not distributed equally'. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph regarding 'we' is confusing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the problem to the solution, which satisfies the requirements for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'nutritious food', 'irrigation systems', and 'transportation networks'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'thrown in garbage' (should be 'thrown in the trash' or 'discarded') and 'lacking to distribute' (should be 'failing to distribute'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary limits the score to a 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'This mainly because' (missing 'is'), 'food in not' (typo for 'is'), and 'large amount of food... is thrown' (should be 'large amounts'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of the ideas. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the essay from reaching the level of 'frequent error-free sentences' required for Band 7.
