Student answer (Band 8.0)

Although agriculture has advanced significantly through the use of modern technology, improved irrigation systems, and high-yield crop varieties, millions of people across the world still suffer from hunger. This essay will discuss the main reasons behind this issue and suggest possible solutions.

One of the primary reasons for global hunger is the unequal distribution of food rather than a lack of production. Many countries produce enough food to feed their populations, yet poor transportation systems, food waste, and economic inequality prevent food from reaching those in need. In addition, poverty makes it impossible for many people to afford nutritious food even when it is available. For example, in some developing nations, supermarkets are well stocked, but low-income families cannot purchase sufficient food because of rising prices.

Another major cause is conflict and climate change. Wars often destroy farmland, disrupt supply chains, and force people to leave their homes, making food production and distribution extremely difficult. At the same time, climate-related disasters such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves reduce crop yields and threaten farmers' livelihoods. These factors have become increasingly common in recent years, particularly in vulnerable regions of Africa and Asia.

To address this problem, governments and international organizations should work together to improve food distribution systems and reduce poverty. Investments in roads, storage facilities, and transportation networks would help deliver food more efficiently and reduce waste. Financial support, job creation, and social welfare programs can also enable disadvantaged families to afford healthy food.

Furthermore, sustainable farming practices should be promoted to reduce the impact of climate change on agriculture. Governments can provide farmers with drought-resistant seeds, modern irrigation techniques, and training in environmentally friendly farming methods. International humanitarian aid should also be strengthened to ensure that people living in conflict zones receive emergency food supplies.

In conclusion, despite remarkable progress in agriculture, hunger remains a serious global challenge because of poverty, unequal food distribution, armed conflicts, and climate change. By improving food access, reducing poverty, and supporting sustainable agriculture, governments and international organizations can significantly reduce hunger and improve food security worldwide.
