Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite the numerous advancements in agriculture industry, many people still does not have sufficient food. This may be due to poverty and lack of agricultural resources in some countries. This issue can be addressed by providing them food at lower prices and improving people's financial conditions.

Nowadays, agriculture has undergone several developments, including usage of fertilizers, pesticides, good quality seeds, and invention of certain tools, which help to increase yield of crops. Yet, many people around the world have insufficient food. One of the major reasons is unavailability of resources such as agricultural land, appropriate temperature or water. For instance, many countries have extreme hot or cold temperature that do not support cultivation of crops. Consequently, they import food products and provide it to public along with heavy taxes, which are unaffordable by many people. In addition, people are unemployed or have low-wages in several underdeveloped countries and developing countries. For example, in many areas of Africa, people could not afford food for their families, as a result they suffered with malnutrition.

These critical challenges can be solved. Firstly, affected countries should be identified and supplied with subsidized food to fulfil their nutrition requirements. For example, countries where people suffered with any natural disaster like floods or earthquake may lose their jobs and properties. Organizations like WHO should survey and support the nations with special fundings who are in need. Moreover, stakeholders should plan skill development programs for individuals and provide them employment opportunities accordingly. In this way, they will be able to support their families for food and other necessities without depending on the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of environmental constraints and economic factors like unemployment. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the suggestion to provide 'subsidized food' is a good starting point, but it lacks depth regarding the long-term sustainability of such programs. The response covers all parts of the task well, but the supporting examples, while relevant, could be more specific to elevate the analysis. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently,' 'In addition,' and 'Firstly' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, there is some minor mechanical usage of these devices, and the referencing could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a coherent manner that guides the reader through the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'malnutrition,' 'subsidized,' and 'cultivation.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'agriculture industry' (should be 'agricultural sector') and 'provide it to public' (missing article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. More sophisticated synonyms and collocations would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'many people still does not have' (should be 'do not have') and 'countries where people suffered' (should be 'suffer'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'support cultivation of crops' (missing 'the'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
