Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the modern era, a series of advancements have been made in agriculture; including modern farming practices and improved cultivation methodologies, that greatly contribute to the increasing agricultural yield. Despite these advancements many people around the world still face the problem of food shortage. The factors such as distribution, inflation and unemployment prevent people from acquiring a proper daily meal. Efforts such as improving the distribution chain, identifying and subsidising basic food products and efforts to reduce unemployment by the government can potentially solve this problem.
The technological advancements in the agricultural sector such as improved machineries, better farming practices along with more accurate weather prediction technologies have greatly contributed to the increased production of various agricultural products. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for global hunger and potential solutions. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you identify factors like distribution and inflation, the section on solutions is underdeveloped, appearing only as a brief list in the introduction rather than being expanded upon in a dedicated paragraph. The example provided is relevant, but the overall depth of analysis is insufficient for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each main body paragraph explores a specific point with clear supporting evidence and logical progression, and provide a more comprehensive conclusion that synthesizes your arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical flow of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As a result of it' to connect sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing is unbalanced, with the introduction and body paragraph being disproportionate. The final sentence, 'These are prevents food security for a consider number of the population,' is grammatically disjointed, which disrupts the flow of the argument. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that transitions smoothly into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultivation methodologies,' 'commodities,' and 'purchasing power.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'These are prevents' and 'a consider number.' These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on collocations and word forms. Instead of 'a consider number,' use 'a considerable number.' Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic terminology will help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('it have also made,' 'These are prevents') and punctuation errors (the semicolon usage in the first sentence is incorrect). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of punctuation. Practicing the construction of complex sentences will help you achieve greater accuracy and variety.
