Student answer (Band 6.5)
Despite significant advances in agricultural technology and food production, millions of people around the world still suffer from hunger. This situation is mainly caused by poverty, conflict and the unequal distribution of food. However, governments and international organisations can take several measures to tackle this problem.
Contributing factor to hunger is poverty. Although enough food may be produced globally, many people cannot afford to buy it because they have very low incomes. In addition, food is not distributed equally among countries and communities. Some areas have an excess of food, while others face severe shortages. Another important factor is war and political instability. Conflicts can destroy farmland, damage food supplies and force farmers to leave their homes. As a result, people in affected regions may struggle to obtain even basic necessities.
There are several ways to address this issue. First, governments should invest in modern farming methods and provide financial assistance, equipment and training to small-scale farmers. This would help them increase their productivity and produce food more efficiently. Second, better storage and transportation systems should be developed to reduce food waste and ensure that food reaches areas where it is needed. Finally, richer countries and international organisations should provide financial and technical support to poorer nations, particularly those affected by conflict or natural disasters.
Only through sustained efforts can this issue be effectively addressed. Global hunger continues despite agricultural progress because of poverty, unequal food distribution and conflict. Governments and international organisations can reduce this problem by supporting farmers, improving food distribution systems and providing assistance to vulnerable countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the causes of global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, you clearly explain the link between poverty and food access, and you provide concrete solutions such as investing in modern farming and improving storage infrastructure. The position is clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or data to support your points, such as mentioning a specific region or a type of agricultural technology, which would add depth to your arguments and demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Finally' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. While the structure is solid, the transition between some sentences could be even more fluid to achieve a more sophisticated flow. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'political instability', 'small-scale farmers', and 'vulnerable countries' appropriately. The language is generally precise and conveys your meaning clearly. However, to move into a higher band, you should incorporate more 'less common' lexical items or idiomatic collocations. For example, instead of 'very low incomes', you could use 'meager earnings' or 'poverty-stricken households'. Additionally, ensure that your word choices are consistently sophisticated throughout the essay to show a greater degree of flexibility and precision in your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although enough food may be produced globally, many people cannot afford to buy it...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There is a minor error in the second paragraph: 'Contributing factor to hunger is poverty' should be 'A contributing factor to hunger is poverty'. Despite this, your grammar is accurate enough that it never impedes communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of advanced grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
