Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes of hunger and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is limited and often repetitive. For example, the explanation of why farmers stop working is unclear due to grammatical errors and lack of specific detail. The arguments regarding government taxes and seed costs are mentioned but not fully explored or logically linked to the global context. The position is clear, but the supporting evidence, such as the mention of Punjab or America, is underdeveloped and lacks the necessary depth to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'As consequences' or 'For this reason, India farmers'. There is a lack of logical progression between sentences, making some parts of the argument difficult to follow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the causes and the solutions is abrupt. While there is an attempt to use linking words, they are often used incorrectly, which hinders the flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'food', 'government', and 'farming'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'sifting another work' (shifting to other work) and 'finish the hunger of food'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas precisely. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the persistent errors in word formation and usage prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('production of food steadily decreasing'), article usage, and sentence structure ('government very low paying to farmer'). Complex structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, such as 'The main reason for this that organic seeds very costly farmers cannot buy it'. Simple sentences are used, but even these contain errors. The control of grammar is weak, and punctuation is inconsistent throughout the text.
