Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite remarkable progress in agricultural productivity in the last 30 years, hunger still persists as a paradox to the modern world. There are a lot of issues by which this happens. I shall discuss the causes, and then I offer some possible solutions.

On the one hand, there are numerous causes by which hunger has remained an issue for centuries. One of the biggest causes is unequal access to food resources. Developed countries produce surplus crops, but developing country farmers stay behind in productivity due to a lack of infrastructure as well as a lack of awareness of modern techniques, which are essential to increase their crop production rate. In addition, economic inequalities create a gap between upper and lower classes to buy crops. Although crops are present, due to insufficient funds, they remain unaffordable for lower-income groups. Finally, political instability creates an environment where only a few can access food and others face starvation.

While these challenges are significant, viable solutions exist. One solution could be to educate farmers about modern methods in agriculture, as well as for the government to provide infrastructure in agriculture. Furthermore, the government should make policies by which food is accessible to every class by implementing price controls or subsidizing basic foodstuffs. Also, political stability should be maintained in the country to protect the nation from hunger in the form of starvation.

In conclusion, even though many problems have created hunger in this innovative world, by proper planning, fixing prices, and maintaining political stability, we can save ourselves from this crisis.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes of global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as unequal access to resources, lack of infrastructure, and political instability. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of 'economic inequalities' is brief and could be strengthened with more specific examples or a deeper analysis of how these factors interact. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the points raised in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the causes and the proposed solutions could be more tightly integrated to improve the flow of the argument. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and serves the structure of the response well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'agricultural productivity', 'infrastructure', and 'subsidizing'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing, such as 'a lot of issues' and 'big causes'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise, academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some accurate complex sentences, such as 'Although crops are present, due to insufficient funds, they remain unaffordable for lower-income groups.' However, there are minor errors in phrasing and word order, such as 'There are a lot of issues by which this happens' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'make policies by which food is accessible'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex grammatical structures to achieve a higher score.
