Student answer (Band 7.5)

Despite significant advances in agricultural technology and food production, millions of people around the world continue to suffer from hunger. This situation exists mainly because food is not distributed equally and many people cannot afford sufficient food.

One major reason is poverty. Although modern farming methods can produce large quantities of food, poor families may not have enough money to buy it. In some developing countries, people also lack access to fertile land, modern machinery, irrigation systems and quality seeds. As a result, their agricultural productivity remains low. For example, farmers in parts of Africa may depend heavily on rainfall, making their crops vulnerable to droughts and changing weather conditions. In addition, wars and political instability can destroy farms, prevent food from reaching communities and force people to leave their homes.

Several measures can be taken to address this problem. First, governments should invest more in rural infrastructure, including irrigation systems, roads, storage facilities and agricultural education. This would help farmers produce more food and reduce losses after harvesting. Second, wealthier countries and international organisations should provide financial and technological assistance to poorer nations. Such support could include drought-resistant seeds, modern farming equipment and training programmes. Finally, governments should improve social welfare systems so that the poorest people can afford nutritious food.

In conclusion, world hunger is not simply caused by insufficient food production. Poverty, poor infrastructure, conflict and unequal distribution are also important factors. A combination of agricultural investment, international cooperation and effective social policies is therefore necessary to ensure that everyone has reliable access to food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes of global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of African farmers' vulnerability to climate conditions and the need for infrastructure investment. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. The arguments are logical and follow a clear progression, demonstrating a strong understanding of the task requirements. No parts of the prompt are overlooked, and the response provides a balanced and comprehensive overview of the issue.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the causes and solutions is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is coherent throughout the text. The use of referencing is accurate, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument without any confusion or mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for an academic task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'agricultural productivity', 'irrigation systems', 'political instability', and 'social welfare systems'. The language is precise and conveys the intended meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common academic synonyms to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task and demonstrates good control over word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of both simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The use of complex structures, such as conditional clauses and participial phrases ('making their crops vulnerable to droughts'), is handled well. Punctuation is used correctly to enhance clarity. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence suitable for this level.
