Student answer (Band 7.5)

Despite remarkable advances in agricultural technology, millions of people worldwide continue to suffer from hunger. This paradox can largely be attributed to poverty, unequal distribution of food and resources, and political instability. However, several measures could be adopted to tackle this persistent problem.

One major reason for global hunger is that food production does not necessarily guarantee food security. In many developing countries, impoverished families simply cannot afford sufficient nutritious food, even when it is available in local markets. Furthermore, agricultural resources are distributed unevenly. Wealthier nations can invest in modern machinery, irrigation systems and high-yield crops, whereas poorer regions often lack these facilities. In addition, armed conflicts and political instability can destroy farmland, disrupt supply chains and force farmers to abandon their livelihoods. Consequently, food may be produced in abundance globally but fail to reach the people who need it most.

Several steps can be taken to address this issue. First, government and international organisations should invest in sustainable agriculture in poorer countries by providing farmers with affordable technology, quality seeds, irrigation and training. This would increase local productivity and make communities less dependent on food imports. Second, stronger food-distribution networks are essential. Governments should improve roads, storage facilities and transport systems so that surplus food can reach food-insecure areas before it deteriorates. Finally, international efforts should focus on preventing conflicts and reducing extreme poverty, since both are fundamental causes of chronic hunger.

In conclusion, hunger persists not because the world lacks the capacity to produce food, but because poverty unequal access and instability prevent its effective distribution. A combination of agricultural investment, improved infrastructure and international cooperation can therefore make substantial progress towards eliminating hunger.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for global hunger and potential solutions. The position is clear from the introduction and is maintained throughout. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the causes (poverty, unequal distribution, conflict) and the solutions (investment in sustainable agriculture, infrastructure, and international cooperation). The arguments are logical and directly relevant to the prompt. The response is well-structured, and the ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of a Band 8, as all parts of the task are covered well with clear, supported arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problem and the solution is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', 'Consequently', and 'Finally' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or faulty cohesion, making the text easy to read and logically sound throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses a range of topic-specific terminology such as 'food security', 'high-yield crops', 'supply chains', and 'chronic hunger'. The language is natural and demonstrates a good level of flexibility. While the vocabulary is strong, it stops just short of the 'skilful use of uncommon items' required for a Band 9. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like reasoning ('If... then' implied) and subordinate clauses ('since both are fundamental causes...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammar is controlled throughout. There is a minor punctuation error in the conclusion ('poverty unequal access'), where a comma is missing between the list items, but this is a minor slip that does not impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest.
