Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people in developing countries are facing difficulties in fulfilment of their basic needs. Despite agricultural advancement and development, many citizens are unable to feed themselves. The possible reasons of this issue along with the preventive measures to mitigate it will be elaborated in ensuing paragraphs.

The main reason for people going hungry is inflation. The rise in price of goods and services along with their cost of production has subsequently affected the lower income family to afford food and shelter. For instance, raised prices of food has seized the purchasing power of people. Such as people earning below €500 per month has to spend more than 50% of their salary in rent and other expenses, it is quite impossible to survive for a month with remaining earning. Besides, rising unemployment is also a major cause of this issue. It is even quite harder for people with a job to survive, there is no way a jobless person is able to buy food for themselves. Moreover, these issues are mostly seen in the developing countries with low household income.

A possible solution to the problem could be providing food and shelter to homeless and jobless people. Several measures could help tackle this problem. First, governments should invest in rural infrastructure, including roads, irrigation, storage facilities and reliable markets. This would allow farmers to reduce losses and transport their produce to areas where it is needed. Small farmers should also receive access to affordable credit, modern equipment and training so that they can increase productivity without becoming heavily indebted.

Second, governments and international organisations should strengthen social safety nets and reduce extreme poverty. Food assistance, school-meal programmes and cash support can protect vulnerable families during economic crises. At the same time, wealthier nations can provide emergency aid and support agricultural development in poorer countries. Reducing food waste through better storage, transportation and consumer education would further increase the amount of food available without requiring a comparable increase in production.

In conclusion, world hunger persists because food production alone does not guarantee access to food. Poverty, conflict, poor infrastructure and waste are major causes of the problem. A combination of agricultural investment, poverty reduction, improved distribution and international cooperation would therefore be far more effective than simply producing more food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. You have identified key causes, such as inflation and unemployment, and provided a range of practical solutions, including infrastructure investment and social safety nets. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of rural infrastructure and school-meal programmes. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesises the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the link between agricultural advancement and the persistence of hunger is explored in slightly more depth, perhaps by discussing the distribution gap more explicitly in the first body paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problem and the solution is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices, such as 'Besides', 'Moreover', and 'At the same time', which help guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct arguments. While the flow is generally natural, some cohesive links are slightly mechanical. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated referencing to connect sentences within paragraphs, ensuring that the relationship between ideas is always explicit.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task, using terms like 'mitigate', 'purchasing power', 'social safety nets', and 'indebted'. The language is generally precise and conveys your meaning well. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'fulfilment of their basic needs' (should be 'the fulfilment') and 'raised prices' (better as 'rising prices'). While you use some less common items, increasing the use of more nuanced collocations would elevate the response further. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to allow for flexibility and precision in your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over conditional structures and passive voice, which are useful for this type of task. However, there are some recurring grammatical slips, such as 'people earning... has to spend' (should be 'have to spend') and 'it is quite impossible to survive for a month with remaining earning' (should be 'earnings'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the highest band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation will help improve your accuracy.
