Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people across the globe still face food shortages, despite of the technological advances made in agriculture. The primary reasons for this are climate change and rising population, while climate resilient crops and birth control awareness are the most viable solutions.

There has been a drastic shift in the earths atmosphere. The sea levels are rising, temperature increasing and icebergs are melting. This is causing disastrous floods and droughts, which sweep away entire crop fields, causing food shortages and famines. Moreover, in the past few years the worlds population has drastically increased and the agriculture being produced is not enough to feed the growing population. It would still take technology a few more years of advancement to be able to yield enough food for all the people.

The most suitable solution to overcome this problem is growing climate resilient crops, that are able to adapt under various circumstances. Numerous countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia cultivate crops that can resist harsh climatical conditions. Another way to deal with this problem is to control the growing world population by spreading birth control awareness, especially in the rural areas of third world countries. For example, Chinas one child policy has been running successfully for decades now and has efficiently curbed the population rate of the country, ensuring all citizens are well-fed and nourished.

In conclusion, the rapidly changing global climatic conditions and increasing population are the main reasons for many people still going hungry around the world. However, switching to climate resilient crops and informing people about birth control are its most suitable solutions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes of global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on population growth is brief and could have been expanded with more nuanced analysis regarding resource distribution or economic factors. The solutions provided, such as climate-resilient crops and birth control, are logical and well-supported by examples like China's policy. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more depth in the explanation of the causes, perhaps by exploring the socio-economic barriers to food access rather than focusing solely on environmental and demographic factors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'The most suitable solution', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is occasionally a bit mechanical. To improve, the student could work on using a wider variety of linking phrases and ensuring that the transition between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard signposting words at the start of every paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'climate resilient crops', 'famines', and 'nourished'. There are, however, some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'climatical conditions' (should be 'climatic') and 'the agriculture being produced' (which is slightly awkward phrasing; 'agricultural output' would be more precise). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but more sophisticated or less common lexical items would be required to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally accurate. However, there are some persistent errors, such as 'despite of' (which should be 'despite' or 'in spite of') and 'earths atmosphere' (missing the possessive apostrophe). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'the agriculture being produced'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where a wider range of complex structures is used with consistent accuracy.
