IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry.
Why is this the case?
What can be done about this problem?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, farming has improved because of modern technology and better farming methods. However, many people around the world still do not have enough food. This essay will discuss the reasons for this problem and suggest some possible solutions.
One main reason is that food is not shared equally. Some countries produce more food than they need, while other countries do not have enough because of poverty, war, or poor transport systems. As a result, many people cannot get the food they need. Another reason is climate change. Floods, droughts, and other natural disasters damage crops and reduce food production in many areas.
There are several ways to solve this problem. First, governments should improve roads and transport so food can be delivered to people more easily. They should also support poor farmers by providing better seeds, farming tools, and training. In addition, rich countries and international organizations can send food and financial help to countries that are facing food shortages. Finally, people should avoid wasting food because a large amount of food is thrown away every day.
In conclusion, although agriculture has developed greatly, hunger still exists because of unequal food distribution, poverty, and climate change. Governments and people should work together to improve food distribution, support farmers, and reduce food waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as unequal distribution and climate change, and proposing solutions like infrastructure improvement and waste reduction. However, the response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement (212 words). This lack of length prevents the development of ideas to the level required for a higher band. While the ideas are relevant, they remain somewhat superficial and lack the depth of analysis or specific examples needed to fully explore the complexities of the issue. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more detailed explanations and concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' effectively to link your points. However, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences is more sophisticated, rather than relying on simple list-like structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'food shortages', 'natural disasters', and 'food distribution'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on common, everyday language. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. To improve, aim to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range, such as using 'mitigate' instead of 'solve' or 'disparities' instead of 'unequal'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and the sentences are easy to understand. You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although agriculture has developed greatly, hunger still exists...'. There are very few grammatical errors, which is a strength. However, to achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, used with more consistency. The current range is sufficient for a 6.5, but lacks the complexity and flexibility required for higher bands.
