Student answer (Band 7.0)

Despite the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still suffer from hunger. This may be attributed to poverty and political conflicts, while improvements in food distribution and agricultural infrastructure could help address this problem.

There are several reasons why hunger remains widespread despite agricultural advances. First, modern agriculture can produce substantial quantities of food. However, poor people may not have enough money to buy nutritious food. Increased food production does not necessarily mean that it is accessible to everyone, as many low-income households can not afford. For example, a family with several children may have to reduce its daily food intake when rising food prices exceed its daily income. Another major factor is political instability and war. Wars can destroy farmland and crops, also sometimes farmers may be forced to leave their land. In addition, conflicts can disrupt transportation and food supplies. As a result, people in conflict-affected areas may face severe food shortages.

Several measures can be taken to address this problem. First, governments and humanitarian organizations should improve food distribution and provide financial support to low-income households. This would ensure that people who cannot afford sufficient food can still access nutritious meals, particularly during periods of rising food prices. In addition, greater investment in agricultural infrastructure could help increase food availability in vulnerable regions. Developing irrigation systems, storage facilities and transportation networks would enable farmers to produce and distribute food more efficiently. As a result, more people could gain reliable access to food and global hunger could be substantially reduced.

In conclusion, poverty and political conflicts are major reasons why hunger remains widespread despite advances in agriculture. However, improving food distribution, supporting low-income households and investing in agricultural infrastructure could play a significant role in addressing this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for global hunger (poverty, political conflict) and actionable solutions (distribution, infrastructure). The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the impact of rising food prices on low-income families and the destruction of farmland during conflicts. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements, and the arguments are logically extended. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples (e.g., mentioning a specific region or type of conflict) to further strengthen the depth of the analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'However' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the causes and solutions is seamless. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument without any mechanical or repetitive patterns.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'agricultural infrastructure', 'nutritious food', 'political instability', and 'vulnerable regions' correctly. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to an 8.0 or 9.0. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a high level of accuracy, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Complex structures, such as 'Although' clauses and conditional-like constructions, are used effectively. There is a minor grammatical slip in the second paragraph: 'many low-income households can not afford' is missing an object (e.g., 'afford it'). However, this does not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the control over grammar is consistent, reflecting a solid command of English syntax.
