Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that despite the advances made in agriculture, many people still suffer from hunger worldwide because of factors such as poverty and the global economic crisis. Measures such as creating employment opportunities and providing funding to organisations that help disadvantaged communities should be taken to reduce this problem.
One of the major reasons why some people around the world still go hungry, even though the agricultural sector produces huge amounts of food every day, is the global economic crisis. Many countries are dealing with its adverse effects, which became worse after the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, many people cannot afford to purchase basic food items because prices are too high compared with their income levels. For example, the price of rice has increased significantly over the last five years, causing problems for many low-income people who heavily rely on it as their staple food. Moreover, some countries cannot afford to import sufficient agricultural products because of high import costs and tariffs. Hence, advances in agriculture have not necessarily improved people's ability to afford food, and hunger remains a serious problem in many parts of the world.
In order to tackle this problem, governments should take initiatives such as providing financial support to organisations that work to combat hunger, enabling them to invest in programmes that assist communities suffering from food shortages. Additionally, employment opportunities should be created to help people earn sufficient incomes so that they can afford their basic food requirements. For instance, governments can provide incentives and low-interest loans to encourage startups, which can create new employment opportunities. This would allow more people to earn stable incomes and improve their access to food.
In conclusion, global economic difficulties, rising food prices and high import costs are among the reasons why many people still go hungry despite advances in agriculture. Governments can help reduce this problem by supporting organisations that provide food assistance and creating more employment opportunities to improve people's financial circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for persistent hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are well-developed, with clear explanations regarding the economic crisis and the impact of the pandemic. The solutions provided, such as government-backed employment initiatives and financial support for aid organisations, are relevant and logically linked to the problems identified. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the arguments are supported by specific examples, such as the rising cost of rice. The response maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements, ensuring all aspects are covered in a balanced manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problem and the solution is smooth. Cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Additionally', are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural, making the argument easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for an academic task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'agricultural sector', 'adverse effects', 'staple food', and 'financial circumstances'. The control of word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. While the range is adequate for a high band, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated, less common collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language. Overall, the lexical range is well-suited to the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional and relative clauses (e.g., '...so that they can afford their basic food requirements'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammar is strong, the range of complex structures could be slightly more varied to reach the highest band. However, the existing control is consistent, and there are no errors that cause difficulty for the reader or impede the clarity of the arguments.
