Student answer (Band 7.0)
Although modern farming techniques have significantly increased global food production, hunger remains a widespread problem in many parts of the world. This essay will examine the main causes of this issue and suggest some possible solutions.
There are several reasons why food scarcity persists despite agricultural progress. Firstly, food distribution is highly uneven; while some regions produce surplus crops, others, particularly in conflict zones or areas affected by natural disasters, struggle to access even basic supplies. Secondly, poverty prevents millions of people from purchasing sufficient food, even when it is available in local markets. Finally, climate change has made farming increasingly unpredictable, with droughts and floods destroying harvests in vulnerable countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Fortunately, there are practical measures that governments and international organisations can take to address this crisis. One effective solution would be improving transport and storage infrastructure, which would allow surplus food to reach needy regions before it spoils. In addition, providing financial support and subsidies to low-income families would enable them to afford nutritious food. Furthermore, investing in climate-resistant crops and sustainable farming methods could help farmers cope with unpredictable weather patterns, thereby securing long-term food supplies. International cooperation, such as the redistribution of surplus grain through organisations like the World Food Programme, could also play a crucial role.
In conclusion, hunger persists mainly due to unequal distribution, poverty, and climate-related challenges, despite agricultural advancements. However, through better infrastructure, financial assistance, and sustainable farming practices, this problem can be significantly reduced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and solutions—with relevant and well-developed ideas. The arguments regarding uneven distribution, poverty, and climate change are logical and clearly explained. However, the response is 249 words long, falling just short of the 250-word minimum requirement. While the content is high quality, this failure to meet the length constraint necessitates a penalty in Task Achievement, as the task instructions were not fully satisfied. To reach a higher band, ensure you expand slightly on your examples or concluding thoughts to comfortably exceed the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-structured with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ideas are logically sequenced, and the progression of the argument is easy to follow. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' is effective and natural. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the transition between the causes and the solutions is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow of the text is coherent, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for an academic essay. You demonstrate a good range of topic-specific language, such as 'food scarcity', 'surplus crops', 'nutritious', and 'climate-resistant'. The word choices are precise, and there are no noticeable errors in collocation or spelling. While the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items could elevate the score further. Overall, the language is natural and contributes effectively to the clarity of your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of concessive clauses ('Although modern farming...') and conditional structures ('...which would allow...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the control over complex forms is consistent. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication at all. The grammatical control is strong and supports the overall academic tone of the response.
