Student answer (Band 7.5)
Despite significant advances in agricultural technology and food production, millions of people around the world continue to suffer from hunger. This situation is caused by several factors, including poverty, conflict, food wastage and unequal distribution of resources. However, governments and international organisations can take a number of measures to address this problem.
One major reason for global hunger is poverty. Although modern farming methods have increased the amount of food produced, many people cannot afford to buy sufficient nutritious food. In developing countries, particularly, low-income families may spend most of their earnings on basic necessities and remain vulnerable to increases in food prices. Another important factor is armed conflict. Wars can destroy farmland, livestock, food supplies and transportation systems, forcing farmers to abandon their land. For example, conflicts in parts of Africa and the Middle East have displaced large numbers of people and made it extremely difficult for them to obtain regular supplies of food.
Food waste and inefficient distribution also contribute significantly to hunger. A considerable amount of food is lost during harvesting, storage and transportation, especially in countries where farmers lack modern facilities such as refrigerated storage. At the same time, some wealthier societies throw away large quantities of edible food. This shows that the problem is not simply a lack of food globally, but also a failure to distribute and manage it effectively.
Several steps can be taken to reduce world hunger. First, governments should invest in agricultural infrastructure and provide small farmers with access to modern technology, affordable seeds, irrigation systems and training. This would enable farmers to produce more food and become less dependent on unpredictable weather. Second, better storage and transportation networks should be developed to reduce post-harvest losses. Governments and food businesses could also introduce programmes that redistribute surplus food to low-income communities rather than allowing it to be discarded.
Finally, the international community should work to prevent conflicts and provide emergency food assistance in regions affected by war or natural disasters. However, food aid alone is not a long-term solution. Countries need sustainable economic development, education and employment opportunities so that people can eventually support themselves.
In conclusion, hunger persists despite agricultural progress because food is not equally accessible, conflicts disrupt food production, and large quantities are wasted. Investing in sustainable farming, improving food distribution and storage, reducing waste, and promoting economic and political stability would help ensure that agricultural advances benefit a much larger proportion of the world's population.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes of global hunger and potential solutions. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the impact of conflict in the Middle East and the role of infrastructure in developing nations. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. The arguments are logical and balanced, moving smoothly from the identification of problems like poverty and waste to actionable solutions like infrastructure investment and international cooperation. The response demonstrates a high level of task fulfillment by providing a comprehensive overview of the issue.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the causes and solutions is seamless. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Another important factor', 'At the same time', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, and referencing is clear throughout. The flow of the essay is natural, and the relationship between sentences is well-managed, contributing to a coherent and professional piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses a wide range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'agricultural infrastructure', 'post-harvest losses', 'sustainable economic development', and 'vulnerable'. The collocation is generally natural, and there is a good awareness of style. While the vocabulary is strong and serves the purpose of the essay well, it occasionally leans towards standard academic phrasing rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic language, which keeps it at a solid band 7.5/8.0 level. There are no significant errors in word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a strong command of grammatical structures. There is a good mix of complex and simple sentences, and the majority of the text is error-free. The use of subordinate clauses and varied sentence beginnings contributes to a fluent reading experience. Punctuation is accurate, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the essay. While the structures are correct and varied, they are generally standard; a slightly higher level of structural complexity or more varied sentence patterns could push this into the band 8.5 or 9.0 range, but the current performance is very strong.
