Student answer (Band 6.5)
As far as this topic is concerned, it is true that despite significant advances in agriculture, many people around the world still suffer from hunger. This problem has several causes, and governments and international organisations need to take effective steps to solve it.
Firstly, one major reason for hunger is poverty. Many people do not have enough money to buy food, even when food is available in their country. Moreover, wars and political conflicts can destroy farms, food supplies and transportation systems. Natural disasters such as floods and droughts can also damage crops and reduce food production. Therefore, agricultural progress does not always mean that food reaches the people who need it most.
There are several ways to address this problem. Governments should provide financial support and modern farming equipment to poor farmers so that they can produce more food. In addition, developed countries and international organisations should provide food and financial assistance to countries affected by poverty, wars and natural disasters. Furthermore, better storage and transportation systems can reduce food waste and ensure that food reaches remote areas.
In conclusion, although agriculture has developed greatly, poverty, conflicts, natural disasters and poor distribution systems are still major causes of hunger. Governments and international organisations should work together to improve farming, reduce food waste and provide assistance to people in need.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying causes of hunger, such as poverty, wars, and natural disasters, and offering solutions like financial support, improved infrastructure, and aid. However, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 220 words. Because of this length deficit, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and the task cannot be fully explored at a higher level. For instance, the discussion on agricultural advances and distribution could have been extended with more specific examples. Consequently, the score is capped at Band 5.5 due to the under-length penalty and the resulting under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall structure with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to causes, solutions, and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, ensuring that causes and solutions are separated into distinct sections. However, due to the shorter length, the cohesive relationships feel a bit compact at times, but overall the organization is clear and coherent, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'agricultural progress', 'financial assistance', and 'transportation systems'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, and word choice is generally appropriate and precise enough to convey the intended meaning without causing confusion. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the text. While the lexical range is not particularly wide or sophisticated enough for a Band 7, it easily surpasses the requirements of Band 5, comfortably earning a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Many people do not have enough money to buy food, even when food is available in their country.' and 'Governments should provide financial support and modern farming equipment to poor farmers so that they can produce more food.' Grammatical accuracy is quite high, with the majority of sentences being error-free and punctuation used correctly throughout. The control over grammar reflects a solid command of sentence construction, matching the descriptors for Band 7.0.
