Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that despite

significant advances in agriculture,

many individuals around the world still

suffer from hunger. This essay will

discuss the main reasons for this

problem and suggest some possible

solution.

There are several reasons why people

continue to go hungry. One major

reason is poverty. Many individuals in

developing countries do not have

enough money to buy food, even

when food is available in their local

markets. Another important factor is

unequal distribution of food. Some

countries produce large amount of

food, while others face other problems

such as droughts / floods or

poor farming conditions. In additions,

war and political conflicts can

destroy farms and prevent conflict

can destroy farms and people

from accessing food. Consequently,

agricultural process alone cannot

solve the problem of hunger.

There are several measures that

Governments and international organisations

can take to address this issue.

Firstly, governments should provide

financial support or modern

equipment to poor farmers. This

consequently, this will help them to

grow more food and increase their

income. Secondly, richer countries

should provide financial assistance

to areas who affected by natural

disasters or conflict. In addition, better

roads and storage facilities should

also be developed so that food can

be transported safely and does not

go to waste. For instance, farmers

can beed benefit from modern

irrigation systems in areas where

rainfall is limited.

In conclusion, poverty, unequal food distribution

are the main causes of hunger. Although,

governments and international organizations

should support poor families, improve

food distribution and provide

assistance to affected regions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons behind global hunger and offering viable solutions. In the introduction, the writer outlines their intention to discuss the causes and solutions, though 'some possible solution' should be plural. The main body paragraphs present relevant and well-developed ideas, such as poverty, unequal food distribution, and conflicts, followed by practical solutions like financial support, infrastructure development, and irrigation systems. The arguments are clearly supported with logical explanations, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor where all parts of the task are addressed and ideas are extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Information and ideas are generally well sequenced, with each paragraph having a clear focus on either causes or solutions. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'One major reason', 'Another important factor', 'Firstly', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some minor mechanical errors or awkward transitions in cohesion, such as 'In additions' instead of 'In addition', and a slight breakdown in the final conclusion where the sentence structure is incomplete ('Although, governments and international organizations should support...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the prompt, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'financial support', 'international organisations', 'natural disasters', and 'irrigation systems'. There are occasional lexical and phrasing inaccuracies, such as 'produce large amount of food' (missing plural 'amounts') and 'areas who affected' (omission of auxiliary verb). Additionally, there is a minor typo with 'beed benefit'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to allow clear communication and shows attempts at less common phrasing, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Complex structures are attempted successfully in places, such as 'Many individuals in developing countries do not have enough money to buy food, even when food is available in their local markets.' However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors, including fragmented or repetitive clauses like 'This consequently, this will help them', missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs, and a problematic concluding sentence that lacks a main clause ('Although, governments and international organizations should support...'). These errors occasionally interrupt the flow but do not prevent understanding, placing the response at Band 6.0.
