Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring the causes of global hunger such as poverty, food waste, and natural disasters, and suggesting solutions including government support, improved infrastructure, and waste reduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion of poverty mentions that people 'do not enough money to buy healthy food' and repeats the idea of selling land. While the main points are relevant, they lack deep extension and specific real-world examples, which places this response at Band 6. The position is clear throughout, but the support remains somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There are noticeable abrupt transitions, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting pronouns confusingly ('buy food for his family... people sell his land'). Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or repetitively ('First, Second, Finally'). Progression is present, but the logical links between sentences occasionally falter, leading to a Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'agriculture', 'fertilizer', 'transportation systems', and 'natural disasters'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'still hunger' instead of 'still go hungry', 'do not enough money' instead of 'do not have enough money', and 'sports poor farmers' instead of 'support poor farmers'. Word choice is frequently basic, and attempts at less common vocabulary result in inaccuracies that sometimes strain the reader. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, omission of auxiliary verbs ('do not enough to eat'), and faulty plurals ('developing country', 'resturants'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries also show issues, such as sentence fragments ('Good quality seeds, training and affordable loan.'). These errors are frequent enough to cause difficulty for the reader at times, though the general meaning remains retrievable, making Band 5 the appropriate score.
