Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite of increased development in farming, a large number of people is still hungry worldwide. The primary reason is that population is doubling in size which diminshes the food stocks. Through strict control measures and taking adequate steps by the government can tackle this problem.

The major reason for people starvation is that nowadays the number of individuals are growing in rapid rate. Even though currently agriculture sector has advanced practices, it is not fulfilling the demands of growing population. This is because the production of food is not matching with the growth of population which leads to food decline. Consequently, it causes inflation to rise which further restricts local people to buy food and that becomes a viscious cycle, which eventually leads to starving. For example, China one of the leading agriculture country has faced problem of food availability due to substancial increase in population size.

The long term solution to this pedicament is that authorities should record the number of people and try to control the population growth through imposing sticter laws and policies. The government can also provide more lands to farmers so they can plow more crops, which will consequently reduce the inflation rate by increasing the food availabilty. For instance, Chinese government has imposed one child policy to restrict population growth and that helped people with food availabilty and affordabilty.

In conclusion, hunger is one of the ongoing problem of the world even though the farming has advanced. I believe this is because people are increasing in size more than ever, which is reducing the food supplies. The government can solve this problem by restricting the growth and providing more area to farmers for food production.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the reasons for global hunger, such as population growth and inflation, and offering solutions, including government policies and expanding agricultural land. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas lack deep extension and rely on broad generalizations. For instance, the claim that China faced food availability issues due to population size is somewhat historically oversimplified and lacks detailed support. While all parts are addressed, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial, placing this response comfortably within Band 6.0 according to the descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate causes and solutions. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Consequently', 'For example', and 'In conclusion', though some referencing and transitional phrases are a bit mechanical, such as 'The long term solution to this pedicament is that...'. Progression is generally logical, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph feels slightly repetitive regarding population growth and food supplies. Overall, this demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'inflation', 'diminhes' (diminishes), 'substancial' (substantial), and 'pedicament' (predicament). However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'viscious' instead of 'vicious', 'diminhes', and 'substancial'. The collocation 'people starvation' is also unnatural. These inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, reflecting the Band 6 descriptor where an adequate range is shown alongside noticeable lexical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating clauses such as 'Even though currently agriculture sector has advanced practices...' and '...which eventually leads to starving.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as the opening error 'Despite of increased development' (instead of 'Despite increased development' or 'In spite of'), 'a large number of people is still hungry' (plural subject agreement error), and 'the number of individuals are growing in rapid rate'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of structural and agreement errors keeps the score at Band 5.5.
