Student answer (Band 6.0)

Data shows that there are many people in the world that have nothing to eat despite the scientific revolution in the field of agriculture. This essay would explore the factors that are causing hunger and their solutions.

One of the most important causes of hunger is the unequal distribution of food. That means food is not divided according to the needs but according to the capital. For example: Canada and USA have surpulus amount of food than their needs while Ethiopia gets the resources less than half of its requirements. Moreover, another significant reason of hunger is the wastage of food. According to the studies, 70 percent of the total food of the world is wasted in developed countries. This wastage of assets has destroyed the food cycle of the society.

To solve the first problem United Nations should take action and put some sanctions on developed countries on hording the resources. In this case there would be decline in inflation in third world countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. And the problem of wastage of food could be eradicated only be the means of local governments. These governments should impose strict laws on wasting food items. In this way they would save a lot of food that they could export to the developing countries.

In conclusion, agricultural reforms have made life easy considerably nevertheless there are few issues that are acting as a hurdle in providing nutrition to all the humanity. But fortunately these challenges can be resolved with a little effort.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring causes of global hunger such as unequal distribution and food wastage, and offering corresponding solutions like international intervention and local legislation. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally relies on broad generalisations or simplistic arguments, such as the claim that 70 percent of the world's food is wasted in developed countries. While the core questions are answered, the supporting points could be further extended with more rigorous economic or social context to reach higher band levels. Overall, it satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant, if somewhat under-developed, ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to causes, solutions, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different thematic ideas, such as grouping the causes in the second paragraph and the solutions in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition markers like 'Moreover' and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition in 'To solve the first problem United Nations should take action...' and minor punctuation omissions. Despite these minor lapses, the logical flow is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'scientific revolution', 'unequal distribution', 'surpulus' (spelled surplus), and 'sanctions'. There are several vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'surpulus' instead of surplus, 'hording' instead of hoarding, and 'eradicated only be the means' instead of through the means. Word choices are sometimes slightly unnatural, as seen in 'wastage of assets'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main arguments clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, including article omissions ('To solve the first problem United Nations...'), punctuation slips, and preposition errors ('resources less than half'). For instance, the sentence 'And the problem of wastage of food could be eradicated only be the means of local governments' contains a preposition error and unnecessary sentence-initial conjunction. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the basic meaning remains clear. This reflects the characteristics of Band 6.0.
