In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry.

Why is this the case?

What can be done about this problem?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that instead of many agricultural advancements, shortage of food is one of the major problems face by the world in 21st century. This is mainly due to adverse climatic conditions that make food vulnerable. However, by using modern preservation techniques for protection of food, this problem can be curtailed.

The most significant cause of lack of food availability is global warming. This is because as temperature increases, it makes the conditions optimal for the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi. These microbes consume the useful food components and as a result release enzymes on it which cause spoilage of eatables and due to this reason it could not tranport over large distances to rural areas and final consumers. For instances, fruits like Mango, Melon and Apple have high water content and high temperature make these ediables more likely spoil. Therefore, this cause can be considered as breeeding ground to this problem.

Nevertheless, by using certain up-to-date methadologies which includes many physical and chemical treatments, the food can be preserved and export to other countries. This is because these techniques such as pasteurization , Auto claving, reduce the moisture content and kill spores of microbes. Then covering of food under fine packaging along with presevatives increase its shelf life. For example, Pakistan exports its mangos to other countries by firstly treating them with dry heat and then adding ethylene. Hence, these measure increase the availability of ffod to regional areas.

In conclusion, despite the advanced agricultural practices, population all over the world sill surfer with food shortage due to decaying of food items during transport but with the use of modernized equipments and techniques, this problem can be tackled.
