Student answer (Band 5.5)

Despite great progress in farming technology, majority of the population of the world still suffer from hunger, The main reasons for this concern include, poverty, lack of a food distribution monitoring system and climate change. This essay provides details regarding the major promoting factors of this issue and how we can resolve it.

The primary reason boosting the hunger issue is poverty. Half of the population cannot afford the adequate amount of food to fulfil their nutritional requirements. This deficieny has played a pivotal role in the expansion of the hunger crisis. In fact, underdeveloping countries are suffering more because their majority of their people belong to the low income housholds in comparison to developed nations. Another major factor which contributes to increasing the rate of hunger problem is the absence of food distribution regulatory authories. There is no proper check and control over the supply and demand of food at a particular place which leads to a disturbance in food availability. Eventually, it can cause severe hunger concerns due to the unavailability of food in certain area.

Additionally, climate change can also increase the hunger issue. Deforestation and overflooding are one of the major concerns which can enhance the consequences of food unavailability. Research has shown that flood affected areas are more prone to hunger risks rather than others.

To resolve this issue, governments should introduce a proper regulatory committee that can monitor the supply of food as per need of that particular place. Furthermore, they should establish a department that can manage natural disasters appropriately.

To conclude, hunger issues are one of the growing concerns of modern world due to various natural events or even as a result of human activities. To overcome this issue governments should intervene and develop a department to deal with this issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying causes of global hunger (poverty, lack of distribution systems, climate change) and suggesting appropriate solutions (regulatory committees, disaster management departments). The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places. For instance, the discussion on poverty touches upon underdeveloping countries having low income households, but the supporting examples remain rather general rather than fully extended. Similarly, the causes linked to climate change are mentioned broadly through deforestation and overflooding without deep contextual exploration. Consequently, the task response aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors, as all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, but some points remain slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the causes and solutions distinctly. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Additionally,' 'To resolve this issue,' and 'To conclude.' However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical; for example, the phrase 'The primary reason boosting the hunger issue' is slightly awkward, and the logical progression between sentences within body paragraphs could be smoother. Furthermore, the comma splice in the opening sentence ('...suffer from hunger, The main reasons...') detracts slightly from flow. Overall, the organizational structure satisfies the Band 6 requirements for clear overall arrangement despite some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'nutritional requirements,' 'pivotal role,' and 'regulatory authorities.' However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher band. For instance, 'majority of the population of the world' misses an article ('the majority'), 'deficieny' is misspelled, 'underdeveloping countries' should be 'developing countries' or 'underdeveloped countries', and 'housholds' contains a spelling error. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting the Band 6 profile for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at complex structures such as 'Research has shown that flood affected areas are more prone to hunger risks rather than others.' However, grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes are frequent throughout the response. Examples include missing articles ('majority of the population'), a comma splice in the first sentence, and preposition or phrasing awkwardness such as 'belong to the low income housholds' instead of 'households.' While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, as the core message remains comprehensible. This balance of mixed structures and persistent errors reflects the Band 6 descriptor for grammatical range and accuracy.
