Student answer (Band 6.5)

Agriculture is significant for the stability of a growing population and recently a number of strategies are being incorporated for the advancement of agriculture. However, it is noticed that a large number of people around the globe still have to starve, despite the improvements in agriculture. I tend to pen down some of the considerable arguments, and share some radical measures to save people from going hungry.

To begin with, The detrimental effect of a rapidly increasing population leads to starvation among people. For instance, the supply of crops like rice, wheat, cotton remains limited each year but the overgrowth of population subjects to greater demands of food and resources and many countries fail to fulfill this. as a result, the underdeveloped countries which lack technological advancements fail to meet the demands. Hence, it is an irrefutable fact that without appropriate measures for population control, even after the needed progress in agriculture, people would continue going hungry, especially under-privileged people, who cannot afford sky-rocketing prices of food.

Moreover, another unavoidable cause could be, the increased occurence of natural disasters like droughts and floods. These disasters destroy the existing crops by rooting out their nutrients and also make the soil unproductive for further plantation of crops. To exemplify, an article published in Dawn reveals that about 70% population in Nigeria suffers from prolonged hunger each year due to inavailability of basic resources, due to climatic disasters and long periods without rain. Thus, it is evident that preventive measures for natural disasters and the management of their after-effects is essential to relieve this suffering of people, over the world.

From my perspective, the utmost measure at hand is that the government should take big steps for the awareness of effects of overpopulation, among the general public such that over increase in population can be controlled before it goes out of hand. Likewise, measures should be taken for avoiding natural disasters such that their effects can be managed appropriately.

To cut the long story short, we can jump to a logical conclusion that other than plans for the imrovement of agriculture like genetic engineering of crops, specific steps and measures should be taken at the government level globally. in order to fulfill the agricultural demands of people and ensure the sufficient availability of food for every human being.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying causes of hunger, such as overpopulation and natural disasters, and proposing viable solutions involving government intervention and disaster management. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as the example referencing Nigeria and the discussion on crop supply versus food demand. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, and some explanations could be more fully elaborated. Overall, the content fully meets the requirements for Band 7, as all prompt questions are answered with relevant and extended ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, using cohesive devices appropriately such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Thus'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct point. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly mechanical, and transitional phrases like 'To cut the long story short' are overly informal for an academic task. Despite these minor lapses, cohesion is generally well managed, earning a solid Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common items such as 'detrimental effect', 'irrefutable fact', and 'genetic engineering'. There is an awareness of style and collocation, although some awkward phrasing occurs, such as 'subjects to greater demands' and 'over increase in population'. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, comfortably sitting at a Band 7.0 due to the successful use of topic-specific terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few punctuation and grammatical errors, such as starting a sentence with a lowercase letter ('in order to fulfill...') and a comma splice in the final paragraph ('...globally. in order to...'). Control over grammar is generally good, and while minor slips persist, they do not impede communication. This reflects the characteristics of Band 7 grammar descriptors.
