Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, explaining reasons for ongoing world hunger and proposing solutions. The student provides relevant ideas, such as poor food distribution, poverty, climate change, infrastructure development, and international cooperation. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or briefly stated, such as when mentioning 'countries like North Africa or the few countries of Asia' without further elaboration. The position is clear throughout, and the main tenets of the prompt are successfully covered, fitting the standard of Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, reasons, solutions, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'Secondly', and 'However'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward phrases like 'are lead to this dangerous problem' and punctuation/spacing errors. Paragraphing is adequate, but logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by grammatical clunkiness.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'paradox', 'disrupts farming', and 'international organizations'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, as well as spelling mistakes ('dramitically', 'effected for this', 'solds', 'compaigns'). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not seriously impeded, which aligns with the descriptor for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in sentence structures. However, frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('poverty are also effect', 'Goverenment should invest'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward passive/active constructions ('that are lead to', 'can be tackle these issues'). While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to restrict the score to Band 5.0.
