Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring reasons why people go hungry despite agricultural advancements and suggesting solutions. A position is presented, and main ideas are introduced, such as the high cost of high-tech farming, unemployment, and population growth. However, the ideas lack full extension and deep support. For example, the statement that 'government should reduce tax from the food products so they can purchase easily' is somewhat simplistic and under-developed. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of explanation keeps the response within the Band 6 descriptors. The overall development would benefit from more detailed examples and elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the response logically into introduction, body paragraphs for reasons and solutions, and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Firstly' are used to sequence ideas, although some cohesive devices feel mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing creates slight bumps in the reading flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas together, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'cutting-edge technology', 'herculean', and 'plethora'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'agriculture sector growing' (missing verb), 'starving' used instead of 'hunger' or 'starvation', and 'provide the employment to the home-less community' (inaccurate phrasing). Spelling errors like 'Concequently' and 'assits' also occur. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary performance firmly at Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0 given the successful attempts at less common words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in grammar, article usage, and punctuation. For instance, 'agriculture sector growing with the cutting-edge technology' lacks an auxiliary verb and has an incorrect article. Other examples include 'it used high-tech machines' instead of using active/passive consistency properly, and comma splices like 'population is growing drastically and demand is two time higher than supply, Concequently, people are suffering'. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching Band 6.5. A score of 5.5 is appropriate due to the persistence of basic structural errors.
